on that short straight preceding the final left8hander leading back onto the main straight( I try to enter the final left8hander from the right hand curbE since this corner is follo!ed by a long straight, any bit of speed ad"antage I can take !ith me out of this corner !ill remain effecti"e for 9in racing terms< a "ery long time( Therefore I !ill, if necessary, sacrifice some speed before entering the corner in order to make sure I am able to accelerate as soonand as hardas possible out of the turn( I need to ha"e absolute control of the car around the apex to be able to point it into the right direction for the subse'uent acceleration( I start from the right8hand curbE I steer early and use the lo!er part of the left8hand curb !hen ISm in the race 9I might use the higher part of the curb in 'ualifying, but only after IS"e made sure my setup permits this<( Softer suspension settings may allo! the car to feel smoother across the high curb, stiffer settings may not( Basically, I !ill point the car to a point some!here at the end of the right8hand curb follo!ing the corner by gradually reducing the steering lock( Smooth dri"ing is an absolute must in r&actor, as it is in a real car( Therefore, I !ill not nail the throttle, but !ill depress the pedal further in three or four steps !hile gradually opening the steering lock( The car !ill probably snake a little, but all that matters is that I can continuously accelerate as hard as my rear !heelsS grip allo!s( If I can do this then for no!, e"erything is optimal( If I cannot, ISll need to change something either in the setup, or in my dri"ing( Assuming then, that I am comfortable !ith the carDs handling coming out of this turn, ISll accelerate flat8out until I see the right8hand curb preceding T/H 9Turn ?ne, a Heft8hander<( Again I !ill aim and dri"e onto that curb( Then, as I reach the end of that curb, I !ill remain on the throttle and steer left a tad earlier than my eyes !ould make me belie"e since, at this speed, the centrifugal forces !ill dri"e the car to!ards the outside of the corner( So I need to make some pro"isions for counter8balance to still be able to touch the inside curb at the apex of the corner 9or !here"er I am aiming for<, and ha"e the car pointed into the right direction for optimal exit( Image Space Incorporated $age 5% 7/27/2006 It is fairly easy to get through this corner if you follo! happy you are about the speed you carried through T/H, you ha"e to immediately sacrifice that speed to prepare yourself in time for T4-( ?b"iously the car !ill not !ant to slo! do!nE it !ill !iggle and buck( %oncentrate on braking and on smoothly bringing the car o"er to the left8hand curb before T4-( >espite the default setup being a fairly stable one, the car !ill still feel "ery much on edge under brakes herebut making the car e"en more stable !ould simply make it too slo!( So !eSll ha"e to li"e !ith this for no!( I imagine a line through T4- ending on the left8hand curb behind the corner and try to find the right combination of speed and control input to keep the car on that line( T4- is follo!ed by a straight, so exit speed is more important than speed before the apex, and ISll act accordingly by trying to prepare for an optimal exit rather than trying to maintain speed through the corner( As I pass the apex and try to get on the throttle early, I notice that the car pushes badly to!ards the outside curb( I ha"e problems getting it to steer to the right !hile at the same time under acceleration it seems "ery CsnakeyD( So here is the first thing !e need to address setup8!ise. I make a mental note that I !ill reduce the differential lock on the po!er side, or the preload, to dial some o"ersteer into the car( I may choose only to reduce the preload since the problem mainly exists !hile the throttle is fully depressed( ?f course, the preload also affects the coast side, so ISll ha"e to decide !hether I !ant the car to o"ersteer more on the coast side 9off8throttle< as !ell( If I perhaps only !ant it a little more loose on the po!er side !ith a little less than full throttle applied and !ould like to regain that extreme stability !ith the throttle fully depressed, I !ould reset the preload to, say, three( ?f course, I could change the o"erall balance of the car by ad)usting the !eight balance, or the anti8roll bars( ?r e"en by changing the suspension settingsnamely, the slo!8action side of the shocks to use !eight transfer to achie"e a change in the carSs balance in specific circumstances( But the differential lock is a nice !ay of achie"ing the same effect !ithout changing the carSs balance, or introducing un!anted side effects( More rear !eight !ill reduce the steering precisionE stiffer Image Space Incorporated $age 5' 7/27/2006 anti8roll bars !ill increase tire !ear and also reduce the o"ersteer tendency in static situations( Increasing !eight transfer !ill only ha"e an effect !hile the !eight is being transferred( The diffD lock is really the best option for me at the moment( The camber is already high enoughor e"en too high( The car feels nicely responsi"e !ith more camber, but increasing it does not al!ays increase the o"erall grip, and it !ill also increase tire !ear on the inside of the tire( I could, of course, decrease the camber at the rear end to get more grip under acceleration, since under acceleration the rear suspension gets compressed !hich turn increases the camber and might lead to the effect that, under acceleration, the rear !heels only ha"e contact !ith the asphalt on the inside instead of on their entire !idth( I might end up !ith more rear end grip under acceleration like this !hich might actually be a point to note if I feel that I donSt ha"e enough rear end grip under acceleration( But right here, the diffD remains the best solution( As for gearing. you can use either third or second gear( Second feels faster, but third may actually "e faster as the car !ill not become so untidy under acceleration, and also because shifting do!n to second under braking might upset the car unnecessarily, thereby pre"enting me from aligning it for the fastest possible exit( &or no!, though, I !ill try and modulate the throttle and steering !heel to get the car pointed in the right direction( Since the car, depending on the setup, responds differently to control input, ISll )ust ha"e to experiment !ith !hich combination of control inputs gets the desired response from the car( The theory is to upset the car moderately and perhaps lose a bit of grip at one end of the car 9the rear end in this case< to make it easier to point the car into the right direction( Again, once the car is pointed in the right direction, it is time to return to CsmoothnessD( I accelerate flat8out to!ards the right8hand curb preceding T=H( This is a "ery slo! left8hander, and you kno! by no! that it is a hairpin8type of corner( I start braking smoothly 'uite a bit before the tire marksat least for the 4oston& 9The skid8marks generally start too late to ser"e as definiti"e brake8markers and are best used as relati"e brake markers8only(<( I notice that, as I )ump off the throttle and under8braking, the car pushes 'uite hard that is, it understeers( Too much brake balance set to the front !heels can cause this( It is no!
