Density and Relative Density of a

Substance
Density
In order to determine the density of a substance or an object, we find out the mass and
volume of the substance and use the relation: D = M
V
Where D is the density M is the mass of that object and V is the volume of that object.
The mass of any object can be found be weihin it on a suitable scale.
The volume can be found by either measurin the object if it is reularly sha!ed e.. a
s!here a cube cuboid cylinder and so on.
Or
"f the object is irreularly sha!ed, then the volume will have to be found be another
method usually by the dis!lacement method in water or other li#uid.
Relative Density
The relative density of a substance is the ratio of the density of the substance to the
density of water. We ta$e the relative density of water as one
What is meant by the statement relative density of old is %&.'( "t means that old is %&.'
times denser than an e#ual volume of water.
Those objects whose relative density is less than one will float in water and those
whose relative density is greater than one will sink.
