Aim: What is "American English"?
Time: 6 minutes to listen to SoundCloud clip "How America Talks" .
10 minutes to discuss clip and history of relationship terms, slang, and
similar terms used in Ss native languages.
5 minutes to browse DAREdictionary.com "100 Sample Entries"
5 minutes for DARE activity Pt. 1
10 minutes for DARE activity Pt. 2
10 minutes to teach SoundCloud instructions
Objectives:
" Listening comprehension and vocabulary lesson; Ss will also learn to leave
constructive commentary on a SoundCloud track (writing).
" Students will be exposed to different types of regional American English
and accents.
" SoundCloud storytelling assignment (speaking and mimicry).
1. "How America Talks" is an episode from the A Way with Words program on
SoundCloud. In this episode, slang terms and regional American English words are
discussed. Relationship titles, past and present, and discussed in chosen clip. Ss will
listen and prepare for class discussion of clip.
2. Introduce the Dictionary of American Regional English's digital version, and lead to
"100 Sample Entries" page. Ss will choose a word from the list and research denition to
produce 2-3 sentences with their choice word. Ss will then form groups to combine
sentences and create a short story.
3. Demonstrate SoundCloud functions and provide instructions for leaving feedback and
commenting. Instruct how to record and upload audio les.
Assignment:
Ss will work together with group from class and record their completed short stories
together for upload on to SoundCloud. Ss will leave comments on peers' recordings.

Level: Intermediate to Advance Adult Learners

Aim: How do we plan an itinerary with detailed descriptions?
Preassigned Homework: Explore Google Maps by following tutorial video and star
favorite points of interest. Ss will also select a favorite trip destination and research
3-5 areas of interest within their choice destination, and list a fact about each area.
Time: 5 minutes to discuss what Google Maps features Ss have discovered.
8 minutes for Ss to talk about their favorite/ideal/dream trip with a partner.
5 minutes to discuss what an itinerary is and provide example of one
executed on Google Maps.
15 minutes to plot out itinerary in a bullet-point list.
15 minutes to explore My Maps feature in Google Maps.
30 minutes to create custom maps with text description and multimedia.
Objectives:
! Ss will use descriptive language to express personal interests, in mostly
writing but speaking to peers as well. Ss will also be able to use personal
experiences as context for practicing the target language.
Tasks:
1. T will assess how much Ss have learned from the homework assignment and list
discovered functions and features on the board. What did they like/dislike? Easy/hard to
use?
2. Ss will present favorite trips to a partner and discuss, exchange experiences.
3. T will demonstrate what an itinerary (list of places to visit with schedule) is by
providing examples. Ss will organize researched areas of interest into an itinerary list.
Allow Ss to explore My Maps features independently and nd places from itinerary on
new map template.
4. T will demonstrate basic features of My Maps include place markers, customizing
marker icons, drawing lines between markers, and adding text/media descriptions.
5. Ss will mark and connect all places from their itinerary and add text/media
descriptions.
6. T will show Ss how to save and share custom maps.

Assignment:
Ss will complete custom maps at home and prepare it for presentation and sharing.
