For opinions that hold up in
court, insist on NFPA 921.
NFPA 921 is the yardstick that the courts apply to
determine if expert testimony will be used or excluded.
In a major rewrite to Chapter 18, the 2011 NFPA 921 emphasizes a scientifc methodol-
ogy to follow in determining fre cause, which will help fre investigators avoid inappropriate
use of the process of elimination. The Daubert ruling put the onus on the judge to be the
gatekeeper of expert testimony, and this edition of NFPA 921 continues to raise the bar of
professionalism for the fre investigation community.

Credibility. Your work demands it and todays
re investigation authority delivers!
Up-to-date with recent court cases, scientifc data, and
trends, the 2011 edition of NFPA 921: Guide for Fire
& Explosion Investigations presents state-of-the-art
investigation protocols that help you excel on the job.
Major revisions give fre investigators, litigators, and
insurance professionals more comprehensive and
effective guidance for todays demands.
Dont leave your ndings open to challenge. Use
scientic methodology to protect your work.
Failing to follow NFPA 921 is the same as asking the
court to exclude your testimony, says John Lentini, CFI,
CFEI, D-ABC of Scientifc Fire Analysis LLC in Big Pine
Key, Florida. In response to court decisions, the 2011
NFPA 921 goes further to prepare fre investigators to
render accurate opinions based on approved methods.
n An all-new section on Report Review Procedure in
Chapter 4 outlines the complete review process in fire
investigation and discusses peer vs. technical review.
n Rewritten Chapter 18, Cause helps ensure fire investi-
gators use scientific methodology when developing
hypotheses, to avoid Daubert challenges resulting from
the absence of supportive evidence, commonly known
as negative corpus.
Make sure youre working with the latest
concepts based on re experience, including:
n Revised Chapter 21, Explosions includes a critical
update of the science and technology affiliated with
explosions, as well as new illustrations and photo-
graphs from major incidents.
n Rewritten Chapter 23, Fire Deaths and Injuries
explains how medical reports on blood tests and tissue
samples can help investigators determine fire origin
and cause. Learn when to request toxicology reports
and how to interpret findings.
n Chapter 25, Motor Vehicle Fires introduces substan-
tially expanded sections covering recreational vehicles
and agricultural equipment. Only the 2011 NFPA 921
has complete data on all types of vehicles, including
electric/hybrids.
n Chapter 26, Wildfires is revised and loaded with new
visuals to assist personnel charged with investigations
involving this growing fire problem.

Ensure the safety and security of LP-Gas
installations with the 2011 NFPA 58.
Recently revised to refect the latest safety practices,
feld experience, and industry advances, the 2011
NFPA 58: Liquefed Petroleum Gas Code provides
accepted criteria for all aspects of the safe design,
construction, installation and operation of the full
range of LP-Gas piping, equipment, and venting,
along with highway transportation of LP-Gas.
New rule for cathodic protection for under-
ground tanks preserves structural integrity.
Corrosion in steel containers buried underground
can create pits or holes that can lead to leaks,
releasing propane into the ground. To prevent
this dangerous condition from occurring, the
2011 NFPA 58 requires ASME containers to
have a cathodic protection system installed and
periodically monitored to maintain expected
performance standards.
Other 2011 changes help prevent failures,
leaks, tampering, res, and explosions:
n Prohibition against using former rail car tanks
n Rules to ensure adequate training for installers
or handlers of propane tanks and piping material
n Revised definitions for better understanding,
application, and enforcement of requirements
Base your decisions on the hazard knowledge
and strategies in the industry benchmark.
If your work involves LP-Gas, stay competitive and
informed with the 2011 NFPA 58, the industrys
must-have source for installers, equipment manufactur-
ers, engineers, AHJs, inspectors, facility owners, and
insurers. (Softbound, 128 pp., 2011)
