When Filipinos talk about revolution, the EDSA Revolution and the events
leading up to it always comes to mind. The revolutions that happened during the martial
law signaled that the Filipinos wont talk crap from a dictatorship anymore. As a youth
and being born in the current generation where there is a lot of freedom like the freedom
of speech and the freedom to do almost anything that you want to do, it is hard to relate
to the stories told to us by our parents, grandparents, and other adults telling the stories
of the times during Marcos term as a dictator. The sources that we have regarding
those events were stories, books, and articles written during those times. After seeing a
documentary about protests done during those times, I have been given a chance to
see what happened and how messed up society was at that time.
During those times, a lot of protests happened. Because of this, there were a lot
of consequences and violence that happened. Since most of the protesters were
students, classes were regularly suspended. Roads and services were also halted
because drivers associations also joined the protests which usually occupy main roads
in major cities. Police retaliation also caused a lot of violence with a lot of people being
reported missing.
I guess well never really know for sure what the people during those times really
felt because we werent there but I think we should all just be thankful for having the
freedom that they fought for.
