SUMMARY
The objectives of this experiment are to study the filtration process, determine the major
factors of filtration, flow rates through the filters and to determine the specific cake resistance
and filter medium resistance. The SPERRY Filter Press (Type 47) was used with filtering
cloth as filter medium. CaCO

slurry was pumped by a Close Type Gear Pump and
pressure of slurry was kept constant at 10 psig with a control valve. 3 plate-and-frame pairs
were used. The filtrate was collected at certain interval of time and flow rates were calculated
manually. A constant pressure was maintained throughout the process. Filtrate was collected
at regular interval and the weight and the time of collection were recorded. Filtration
continued until the flow almost ceased. After that the plates and frames were dismantled to
remove the cake and wash the filter cloths. The unit was reassembled then. The time required
for dismantling, washing and reassembling (downtime) was recorded. The experiment was
performed for two different pressures (10 and 20 psig) to determine the effect of pressure on
filtration. After performing this experiment, Reciprocal Filter Rate vs. Cumulative volume of
filtrate was plotted to find the constants of filtration. The optimum volume and the optimum
time per cycle were found 0.765 m
3
and 222.95 minutes for 10 psig and 0.421 m
3
and 84.52
minutes for 20 psig.
