defeat Mecca)

Muhammad died 632

The Umma started to dominate the Arabian peninsula

Abu Bakr succeeded Muhammad

Abu came up with the 5 pillars of
Islam

Caliphate Office of succession
to Muhammad and name of
empire

Many fighting over the caliphate


Three more leaders went by including
Ali

Muawiya emerged as caliph

Muawiya chose his own son to succeed
him

The Umayyad Caliphate was born

Sunnis community should select the
leader

Kharijite Alis followers (Shiite)
Abbasid Caliphates
In 750 the Umayyad fell and the Abbasid
Caliphates rose to power (750-1258)

Lost a lot of territory

Mongol invaders killed the last of Abbasid
Caliphate end
The empire then turned into a bunch of states

But Islamic Umma stayed intact
