Title: Gender in the Media
Time: 50 minutes
Objectives: at the end of class
Students will understand why there is such a controversy about Barbie being on the cover
of Sports Illutrated
Students will realize how certain websites (Mattel specifically) cater to gender
stereotypes
Students will annotate the article in order for them to get a better understanding
Students will come up with questions that pertain to the article and that will be beneficial
to the discussion tomorrow
Materials:
Youtube news video
Barbie annotation sheet
Notecards
Mattel website
Procedure:
Opening:
Take attendance
Let them know that they are taking a two day break from Romeo and Juliet
Body:
Watch the news video about the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition with Barbie on the
cover
Hand out the article about what we just watched
Have them annotate the article specifically pointing out parts that relate to gender and
objectifying women
Show them the Mattel website and how it caters to gender stereotypes
Closing:
Have them write down five questions on a notecard regarding the article, video, and
website
Have them hand in the notecards
Let them know that we will be having our Tuesday discussion tomorrow
Standards:
4.1: Prepare for small and large group discussions through reading and research
Assessment:
I will look at their annotated worksheets in order to make sure that they understood the
material and then I will mark it in the grade book for completion as a formative grade
I will look at the students questions on their notecards and choose the top ten questions I
think will be relevant for discussion tomorrow
I will ask them questions about the Mattel website, and have them tell me why this
website is so stereotypical of gender
