Why does a discrete series representation of a signal always have a frequency ra

nge of 2pi?
Given a time domain continuous signal, for generating a discrete signal from thi
s, we sample it. This leads to convolution and hence repetetion after equal inte
rvals in frequency domain. This leads to a most simple analogy of circle which i
s repetetive. Hence the freuqncy representation is changed to a range of 2pi.
Can a linear time invariant system produce new frequencies?
No. They are involved in a process of convolution in time domain which is nothin
g but multiplication in frequency domain. Hence they cannot produce frequencies
which are not present in the original signal.
A general explanation of generating a AM signal:
Since AM involves generating a new signal, using simple LTI system is not a vali
d option. As such we should use a Non linear Time Invariant system or Linear Tim
e Variant system. This involves choppers and switches or a Non Linear device lik
e diode.
