Guns, Germs, and Steel Chapter 5: Historys Haves and Have-Nots Discussion

1. In the Katrina video there was a lot of background and in the scenes information;
Diamond does that as well in this book. In this chapter he gets deep down to the origin of
the crops and animals. Does this connect to our everyday life like Katrina did?
2. Consensus is virtually complete that the human species originated in Africa and the
oldest human societies developed on that continent. Diamond, in this chapter, takes very
little thought of Africa at all... Is this like the discrimination of the victims of Katrina
being denied basic citizenship?
3. The title of this chapter is Historys Haves and Have Nots. Does Katrina fit into this title?
But does it fit into the context of the chapter?
4. The peoples areas with a head start on food production thereby gained a head start on
the path leading toward guns, germs, and steel. Diamond states in the last paragraph of
this chapter. Was Katrina the germ, the people were the steel and the government the
gun? Which way should it go? Why?
