IMPORTANT GENERAL INFORMATION

Currently, several fellowships offer pre-and/or post-doctoral support to University of
Washington epidemiology students. Some from outside the UW are also listed. Contact
information is listed below.

If you are a physician, it is also advisable to contact the University of Washington Medical
Center (UWMC), which sponsors a number of postdoctoral fellows each year. See
http://uwmedicine.washington.edu/Education/Pages/default.aspx. Dentists may wish to contact
Dental Public Health or the School of Dentistry at http://www.dental.washington.edu/. Most
postdoctoral fellowship deadlines are prior to Epidemiology application.

Pre-doctoral fellows usually receive approximately $1,800/month and about 55% of resident
tuition with non-resident tuition waived. Most predoctoral fellows can find a 10 hour/week RA
to pay for most of the remainder of tuition. Some fellowship programs related to the
Epidemiology Department do not consider pre-doctoral students until after admission, but
some deadlines are earlier so look now.

Most traineeships go to advanced rather than to first year PhD or masters students but it is worth
checking, if you are eligible. International students are not eligible unless specifically indicated.
A trainee is required to write his/her thesis and/or dissertation, in the research area of the training
grant. Research Assistantships are open to international students. (See URL below)

A particular fellowship may not have any open positions the year you begin your studies. Most
new students without a U.S. doctorate begin their studies with an RA rather than a fellowship.
See Funding Information at http://depts.washington.edu/epidem/funding/index.shtml for critical
information about how to look for funding. You must be very proactive.

New Connections: Increasing Diversity of RWJF Programming
http://www.rwjf-newconnections.org/about-us
The New Connections program emerged from a series of conversations among senior program
staff at RWJF about how the Foundation could support and learn from the growing diversity of
the communities we serve. The group, consisting of Foundations senior staff, leaders of the
Human Capital Portfolio, and Debra Prez, Ph.D., Senior Program Officer, recognized that
talented individuals from underrepresented communities can often be isolated in their early- or
mid-career pathways and overlooked for funding. To address this situation, an initiative was
created that would foster new relationships between RWJF and researchers, evaluators, and
consultants from underrepresented groups. This initiative was New Connections.
