ANALYSIS OF MATERNAL MORTALITY DUE TO SEVERE PREECLAMPSIA AND

ECLAMPSIA AT HASAN SADIKIN HOSPITAL DURING 2008-2011

Soraya, Saskia M., Anwar, Ruswana.

Background: Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) in Indonesia still remains high, approximately
228 per 100.000 live births (SDKI 2007). In Indonesia, eclampsia is the second cause of maternal
death after hemorrhage with a prevalence of 24%, and in West Java maternal mortality ratio due
to preeclampsia and eclampsia in 2006 is reported to be 11.13%.

Objective: The study was carried out to identify risk factors such as maternal age, parity and
gestational age on pregnant women who died due to severe preeclampsia and eclampsia and to
describe cause of death.

Methods: This was an observational analytic research using case control study. All records of
maternal death associated with severe preeclampsia and eclampsia were obtained from medical
record between 1 January 2008 and 31 October 2011. Number of sample was 30 cases and 120
controls. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and bivariate analysis with chi square test.

Result: This result showed, risk factors that influence maternal death in severe preeclampsia and
eclampsia according to multivariate analysis were maternal age (OR=7,00;95% CI:2,46-19,89; p
<0.001) and parity (OR=18,46;95% CI: 1,78-191,4; p<0.001). Multiple organ failure causes 30%
of maternal death in severe preeclampsia and eclampsia.

Conclusion: Maternal age and parity are associated with maternal death in severe preeclampsia
and eclampsia. Multiple organ failure is the most common cause of death in severe preeclampsia
and eclampsia.
