Happy Christmas
The other night I had a dream. It was
not a good one. In the dream, I was
in a big room with perhaps one
hundred people, and all of the
attendees were there to celebrate
Christmas. Suddenly the group
started a heated debate on why
Christmas should no longer be celebrated and an ugly fight broke out
amongst the audience. I was observing and thinking it was not right.
Then somebody pushed me so hard that I lost my balance and almost
fell on an elderly woman who started crying. I apologised to her and
slapped the man who had pushed me. Then I offered my arm to the
woman and we left the room together.
Christmas means peace to me. It is all about a Child who made a
difference in our world. I am not interested in trees, decorations,
presents and parties. We gave gifts and cards up many years ago and
every year we send a donation to the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital.
Our small donation makes a difference in the lives of a woman and
restores her dignity. There is no better gift. www.fistulafoundation.org

Not To-Do List for 2014
I have decided to start a list of time
wasters that I will cut out from my
daily schedule. I will not wait until
2014: I am already practising.
First, I do not check 4 of my 6 email
addresses before lunch. Not only
does this help me get more done
during my morning magic time
hours, but it also prevents me from
having my day ruined by some
negative feedback. In the past, I would often rush with smug replies
and witty retorts that left an unpleasant taste in my mouth.
I have also cut back on negative Twitter and refuse to get into online
confrontations.
I no longer mindlessly surf the Internet and have much more time to
attend to my books. I might even dust some cobwebs and refresh a
couple of languages I used to be fluent in.
I have already cleared some 50% of the newsletters or websites I
subscribed to.
I will not enter into unprofitable, time-consuming projects and
relationships. Hanging around negative, gossiping people destroys
ones soul and does not enrich ones life.
I will not fill my days with wrong
activities and find myself in a rut,
doing the same wrong things over
and over again.
I will try harder to carry the burden of
the weakest and poorest among us
and will be less set in my ways.
I really want to take a new path.

Farewell, Nelson Mandela
I marched when I was still a child to protest
against apartheid, a disgusting concept. I
joined, once a week for nearly four years,
the supporters of the Non-Stop Picket and
stood on the pavement directly in front of
the South African embassys gates. We
would engage passing members of the
public and asked them to sign the petition
calling for the release of Nelson Mandela. By the time the Non-Stop
Picket celebrated its 1000
th
day on 12 January 1989, over half a million
signatures had been collected. On 14 March 1987, I was one of the
5,000 people who marched six miles across London on the March
for Mandela. I also celebrated his release from prison in Trafalgar
Square on 11 February 1990. I feel that Nelson Mandela has always
been part of my life and was saddened by his death. In his words:
What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what
difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the
significance of the life we lead.
A new theory
An article on Christmas dinners for type 0 blood caught my attention.
Please read Eat Right 4 Your Type on page 20 to learn what is behind
this concept. We are all blood type 0 in the family so we should eat:
white sweet potatoes; the mash should be a fusion of parsnips and
yellow sweet potatoes; Yorkshire puddings should be made of spelt
flour, which contains protein, which of course, is better for the 'O' type,
who needs protein more than carbohydrates.
The main meat will be beef, lamb or veal. Shame I am a vegetarian! We
should be drinking fizzy water, juices from the fruits that are good for
us (pineapple, mango, cherry), red wine and green tea.
The vegetable serving bowls will contain broccoli, kale, spinach,
artichokes and parsnips. Traditional peas and carrots would just be
there for fun and decoration, as they carry no special benefits for the
'O' type, but will also not harm us. We should find that we feel
energised and healthier by incorporating these changes into our diet.
We will try and report back.

LETS TALK
ABOUT
GMO
The Rise of Corporate Terrorism
Last year, the first-ever lifetime feeding study assessing the health risks of genetically
engineered Roundup Ready corn was published
Last month, Food and Chemical Toxicology retracted the study saying it did not meet
scientific standards
While no errors or misrepresentation of data were found, the journal stated the study had
too small a sample size to make any definite conclusion about health effects. This is in
clear violation of retraction guidelines for scientific publishing
Earlier this year, the publisher created a brand new editorial position, Associate Editor for
Biotechnology: Richard E. Goodman, a former Monsanto scientist, got the job.
The bizarre justification for retracting the feeding study is enough to indicate that
corporate terrorism has seized the field and is actively undermining science as we
know it.
Ever since the introduction of genetically engineered (GE) seeds in the mid-
1990s, the market for these chemical-dependent crops have spawned a
multibillion dollar industry. Funding for the development of more varieties of
GE crop varieties has come primarily from the privately-owned chemical
technology industry itself. Over the last 15 years, conflicts of interest within
science have exponentially increased, and at this point, it is blatantly obvious
that financial conflicts of interest play a major role when it comes to what
research is done; what gets published, and what doesnt.
Conflicts of interest are also at the heart of yet another round of controversy
revolving around genetically engineered foods. Corinne Lepage, a Member
of the European Parliament and former French environment minister, recently
called for the resignation of Anne Glover, chief scientific adviser to the
European Commission. Glover, a GMO-advocate, was appointed to her
position two years ago. Now, all of a suddenfor the first time since 1996
the commission is considering authorizing the cultivation of GM corn in

Europe. Coincidence? Lepage doesnt think so. Do you?
Other scientists have also spoken out about the abuse and intimidation they
suffer simply for publishing findings that point to problems relating to
genetically engineered foods.
In September 2012, the first-ever lifetime feeding study assessing the health
risks of genetically engineered (GE) Roundup Ready corn (NK603) was
published in Reed Elseviers peer-reviewed journal, Food and Chemical
Toxicology.
The two-year long study led by Gilles-Eric Sralini revealed shocking health
effects, including massive tumors and early death.
Rats given glyphosate in their drinking water also developed tumors.
Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Monsantos herbicide Roundup, which
has recently been implicated as a major contributor to chronic disease.
Needless to say, Sralinis findings set off a fire-storm of opposition from the
industry.
Last month, the publisher retracted the study saying it did not meet scientific
standards. While no errors or misrepresentation of data were found, the
study had too small a sample size to make any definite conclusion about
health effects, Elsevier said.
According to Reuters: The journal said that while it received many letters
expressing concerns about the validity of the findings, the proper use of
animals and even allegations of fraud, its own investigation found no
evidence of fraud or intentional misrepresentation of the data. However, there
is a legitimate cause for concern regarding both the number of animals in
each study group and the particular strain selected.
As stated by Corinne Lepage at a November 28 press conference, Sralinis
paper raised valid questions about the safety of GMOs and Roundup, and
retracting the paper will not make these questions disappear.
Jol Spiroux de Vendmois, physician and co-author of the Sralini paper
called the retraction a public health scandal, noting that the journal had
already scrutinized the study more closely than other papers prior to
publishing. And the European Network of Scientists for Social and
Environmental Responsibility issued a statement calling the retraction a
travesty of science that looks like a bow to industry.
Please look carefully at the poster on page 14. I no longer buy products made
by Del Monte, Naked, Green & Blacks, Bayer etc. and reward the True
Organic Heroes. Stand with me against corporate terrorism and read more
on the subject clicking in the link below.

Eat Right 4 Your Type: Blood Types
One of the hallmarks of alternative medicine is the recognition of the
biochemical uniqueness of each individual and the need to tailor treatments
and prescriptions to match that individual variability. While a person's genetic
code, ultimately, is the basis of this individuality, basing treatments on genetic
factors is too broad an approach and not consistent with alternative
medicine.
According to naturopath Peter J. D'Adamo, N.D., in his book Eat Right 4
Your Type, the missing link might be the four basic blood types: O, A, B, and
AB. There had to be a reason why there were so many paradoxes in dietary
studies and disease survival, why some people lose weight and others do
not on the same diet or why some people keep their vitality as they age, and
others do not, says Dr. D'Adamo.
His research into anthropology, medical history, and genetics led him to
conclude that blood type is the key that unlocks the door to the mysteries
of health, disease, longevity, physical vitality, and emotional strength. Dr.
D'Adamo explains that the practical application of the blood type key is
that it enables you to make informed choices about your dietary, exercise,
supplement, and even medical treatment plans. With the blood type road
map these plans can now correspond to your exact biological profile and
the dynamic natural forces within your own body.
Type O- People with type O blood fare best on intense physical exercise and
animal proteins and less well on dairy products and grains, says Dr.
D'Adamo. Dr. D'Adamo believes that the leading reason for weight gain
among Type Os is the gluten found in wheat products and, to a lesser extent,
lentils, corn, kidney beans, and cabbage. Ideal exercises for Type Os include
aerobics, martial arts, contact sports, and running.
Type A - Those with blood type A, however, are more naturally suited to a
vegetarian diet and foods that are fresh, pure, and organic. As Type As are
predisposed to heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, Dr. D'Adamo says that
I can't emphasize how critical this dietary adjustment can be to the sensitive
immune system of Type A. Type A's prefer calming, centering exercise, such
as yoga and tai chi.
Type B - Type Bs have a strong immune system and a tolerant digestive
system and tend to resist many of the severe chronic degenerative illnesses,
or at least survive them better than the other blood types. Type Bs do best
with moderate physical exercise requiring mental balance, such as hiking,
cycling, tennis, and swimming.
21
Type AB - Blood type AB, the most recent, in terms of evolution, of the four
groups and an amalgam of types A and B, is the most biologically complex.
For this group, a combination of the exercises for types A and B works best.
Blood type, with its digestive and immune specificity, is a window on a person's
probable susceptibility to or power over disease, according to Dr. D'Adamo. For
example, Type Os are the most likely to suffer from asthma, hay fever, and other
allergies, while Type Bs have a high allergy threshold, and will react allergically only if they
eat the wrong foods. Type Bs are also especially susceptible to autoimmune disorders,
such as chronic fatigue, lupus, and multiple sclerosis. Type ABs tend to have the fewest
problems with allergies, while heart disease, cancer, and anemia are medical risks for
them.
With arthritis, Type Os, again, are the predominant sufferers because their
immune systems are environmentally intolerant especially to foods such
as grains and potatoes which can produce inflammatory reactions in their
joints. Types A and B are the most susceptible to diabetes, while types A and
AB have an overall higher rate of cancer and poorer survival odds than the
other types.
While you cannot change your blood type, you can use knowledge about its
nature to implement a dietary plan biologically suited to your makeup, says
Dr. D'Adamo, who supplies copious details on eating plans for all four types.
"Most of my patients experience some results [within two weeks of starting
the diet plan]-increased energy, weight loss, a lessening of digestive
complaints, and improvement of chronic conditions such as asthma,
headaches, and heartburn."
Using family history and blood type, as well as simple diagnostic tools like
fingerprint analysis and measurement of jaw angle, Dr. D'Adamo shows you
how to map out your genetic makeup to discover which of the six GenoType
plans is right for you.
GenoType 1 - The Hunter
Tall, thin, and intense, with an overabundance of adrenaline and a fierce,
nervous energy that winds down with age, the Hunter was originally the
success story of the human species. Vulnerable to systemic burnout when
overstressed, the Hunter's modern challenge is to conserve energy for the
long haul.
GenoType 2 - The Gatherer
Full-figured, even when not overweight, the Gatherer struggles with body
image in a culture where thin is in. An unsuccessful crash dieter with a host
of metabolic challenges, the Gatherer becomes a glowing example of health
when properly nourished.
22
GenoType 3 - The Teacher
Strong, sinewy, and stable, with great chemical synchronicity and stamina,
the Teacher is built for longevity - given the right diet and lifestyle. This is the
genotype of balance, blessed with a tremendous capacity for growth and
fulfillment.
GenoType 4 - The Explorer
Muscular and adventurous, the Explorer is a biological problem solver, with
an impressive ability to adapt to environmental changes, and a better than
average capacity for gene repair. The Explorer's vulnerability to hormonal
imbalances and chemical sensitivities can be overcome with a balanced diet
and lifestyle.
GenoType 5 - The Warrior
Long, lean, and healthy in youth, the Warrior is subject to a bodily rebellion
in midlife. With the optimal diet and lifestyle, the Warrior can overcome the
quick-aging metabolic genes and experience a second, silver age of health.
GenoType 6 - The Nomad
A GenoType of extremes, with a great sensitivity to environmental
conditionsespecially changes in altitude and barometric pressure, the
Nomad is vulnerable to neuromuscular and immune problems. Yet a well-
conditioned Nomad has the enviable gift of controlling caloric intake and
aging gracefully. Find out more in www.dadamo.com

My Tuscan pantry, with a few additions
I do not buy pre-packed meals and
cook at least once a day from fresh
ingredients. However, in my Tuscan
pantry, I always have some staple
foods for emergencies.
Organic extra virgin olive oil is a
staple in the Mediterranean diet as
well as an anti-inflammatory diet.
The oil is comprised mostly of mono
unsaturated fatty acids, which have
been found to reduce the risk of
heart disease and lower total
cholesterol levels while normalizing
blood clotting and regulating blood sugar. We do not use olive oil for
cooking, but drizzle it onto a salad or add it to foods after they are
cooked to enhance their flavour. It takes less than 10 minutes to prepare
a great bruschetta.
Lentils, also a Mediterranean favourite, that are high in protein and
contain about 17 grams of fiber per 115g. You can make lentil soup or
add them to soups, you can serve them warm as a side dish or toss
them with olive oil and garlic.
Raw nuts and seeds make a great snack that satisfies hunger and keep
you feeling fuller longer. I stock up on walnuts, almonds, pecans,
cashews as well as sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, or even hemp
seeds. They offer a host of health benefits and can help burn stubborn
belly fat as well, stabilize blood sugar and reduce cravings for unhealthy
foods.
I use quinoa in place of oatmeal or rice or mix it into baked goods or
casseroles it is extremely versatile and filling too. Quinoa is often
referred to as a whole grain, but its actually a seed. It contains the
perfect balance of all nine amino acids essential for human nutrition and
it has a delicious nutty taste.
Herbal teas that are an excellent replacement for sugary drinks and can
also offer a solution to a number of ailments. Peppermint and ginger can
aid stomach upset, chamomile help ward off insomnia and Echinacea
can shorten the duration of a cold or flu. Green tea contains lots of
antioxidants that help to provide energy and strengthen the immune
system.
25
Canned organic vegetables can be an important staple, especially in the
winter when there are not as many fresh vegetables available. If you have
to purchase veggies, choose those packaged in non-BPA lined cans or,
even better, glass jars. Canned organic vegetables are extremely useful
in preparing quick meals and bulking up recipes to make them more
As olive oil is not the best for cooking, I use coconut oil. It is one of the
richest sources of healthy saturated fat. Populations who eat a large
percentage of calories from coconuts are known to be much healthier
than those in other countries. Coconut oil contains medium chain fatty
acids that are resistant to high heat and can easily turn into ketone
bodies in the liver. The ketone bodies provide energy for the brain and
can be used to improve a wide variety of health issues.
Almond flour is a staple for anyone who wants to avoid gluten, and there
are multiple reasons that most people should. It can be used to replace
standard refined or wheat flours in many baking recipes. Coconut flour
can also be a great substitute for regular flour.
I do not like milk and find organic coconut milk a great vegan-friendly
substitute for traditional milk. It is high in plant-based energy- burning,
short-chained fatty acids and also contains antiviral and antibacterial
properties. The saturated fat it contains is good for you and will also help
to increase fullness. I use it in smoothies.
Dried herbs and spices add lots of flavour to a dish, most help to protect
against chronic illness and a variety of health conditions like heart
disease, diabetes and cancer. Seasonings like cinnamon, often lead lists
of commonly eaten foods with the highest levels of measured antioxidant
activity. Oregano, basil, parsley, cayenne, thyme, nutmeg, cinnamon,
ginger, pepper, mustard powder, cardamom, coriander, cilantro, and
turmeric are essential to my home cooking.
Tuna, which I buy in glass jars in Italy, can be used in many different ways:
flake it and use it with any type of pasta; eat it accompanied by
vegetables; make a quirky terrine with ricotta cheese, paprika and spring
onions.
Cantuccini, hard Tuscan biscuits with almonds, are an occasional treat,
especially with Vin Santo, fortified white wine.
Figs contain a type of antioxidant called phenols, which may lower the
risk for heart disease and cancer by preventing cell damage caused by
dangerous free radicals. Fibre lowers risk for high cholesterol, heart
disease and constipation. The fibre in figs may also help lose weight
since it makes figs more filling, helping you eat fewer calories.

About eggs
We had several hens in our garden
and they would lay at least 8 eggs
every day. The eggs were placed
on a kitchen rack, never
refrigerated, and would be
consumed within days of coming
into the house from the pen. The
pen was large and cleaned every
day. The eggs were dusted and washed only minutes before
being used.
However, many store eggs in the refrigerator and would not think of
doing it any other way. Indeed one should if the eggs go through an
egg-washing process that may actually make them more susceptible
to contamination with bacteria like Salmonella. If an egg is infected
with salmonella, the bacteria will multiply more quickly if the egg is
stored at room temperature instead of in the refrigerator, particularly if
theyre stored for longer than 21 days. In industrial concentrated
animal feeding operations or CAFOs the risk of salmonella
contamination rises.
In CAFOs, egg-laying hens are often crammed into tiny quarters.
Disease is rampant, and the birds ARE filthy, not because of their
nature, but because they are removed from their natural habitat and
their resistance to disease is compromised.
Eggs from such large flocks and eggs from caged hens have many
times more salmonella bacteria than eggs from smaller flocks,
organically fed and free-ranging flocks.
Theyre also more likely to be antibiotic-resistant strains, due to the
flocks routine exposure to such drugs. When you have eggs from tens
of thousands of chickens - or more - all under one roof, theres a good
chance theyre going to get faeces and other contaminants on them.
The solution, rather than reducing the size of the flocks and ensuring
better sanitation and access to the outdoors, is to wash the eggs. But
this is not as innocuous as it sounds.
As the eggs are scrubbed, rinsed, dried, and sprayed with a chlorine
29
mist, its protective cuticle may be compromised. This is a natural
barrier that comes from the hen that lays the egg, and it acts as a
shield against bacteria.
It even contains antimicrobial properties. Egg-washing strips this
natural protectant from the egg, which may actually make it more likely
to become contaminated. According to European Union guidelines:
Such damage may favour trans-shell contamination with bacteria and
moisture loss and thereby increase the risk to consumers, particularly
if subsequent drying and storage conditions are not optimal.
Industrial egg washing, by the way, is banned in much of Europe, not
only because of potential damage to the eggs cuticles but also
because it might allow for more sloppy egg-producing practices.
The chief executive of Britains Egg Industry Council said: In Europe,
the understanding is that [prohibiting the washing and cleaning of
eggs] actually encourages good husbandry on farms. It's in the
farmers' best interests then to produce the cleanest eggs possible,
as no one is going to buy their eggs if they're dirty.
Unfortunately, since an eggshell contains approximately 7,500 pores
or openings, once the natural cuticle has been removed what's put
ON your egg goes INTO your egg: whatever the eggshell comes into
contact with can cross over this semi-permeable membrane and end
up in your scrambled eggs, from chlorine to mineral oil to dish soap to
salmonella.
European egg marketing regulations state that storing eggs in cold
storage and then leaving them out at room temperature could lead to
condensation, which could promote the growth of bacteria on the shell
that could probably get into the egg as well. The EU therefore advises
storing eggs at a constant non-refrigerated temperature: EU
guidelines therefore stipulate that eggs should be transported and
stored at as constant a temperature as possible a temperature
between 66.2F and 69.8F in the winter and between 69.8F and
73.4F in the summer.
So, despite what you may have heard, eggs that are fresh and have
an intact cuticle do not need to be refrigerated, as long as you are
going to consume them within a relatively short period of time.

So, IF your eggs are very fresh, and IF their cuticle is intact, you do
not have to refrigerate them. The bottom line is shelf life. The shelf life
for an unrefrigerated egg is 7 to 10 days and for refrigerated, it's 30
to 45 days. A good rule of thumb is one day at room temperature is
equal to one week under refrigeration.
Since most organic egg producers are typically interested in producing
high-quality eggs, many of themespecially small, local farming
operationshave implemented gentle washing methods that don't
compromise the cuticle. However, you certainly can't tell by looking at
them what type of washing process they may have gone through. The
only way to know if your eggs have been washed or oiled (and using
what agents) is to ask the producer - and the only way to do that is
to buy from small local farmers you have direct contact with.
Locally Raised Eggs Are Usually Best
The key here is to buy your eggs locally; this is even preferrable to
organic eggs from the grocery store. Finding high-quality organic eggs
locally is not easy around Shirley. Farmers markets are another great
way to meet the people who produce your food. With face-to-face
contact, you can get your questions answered and know exactly what
you're buying. Better yet, visit the farm - ask for a tour. If they have
nothing to hide, they should be eager to show you their operation.
Eggs ARE a Highly Nutritious Food
There is a major misconception that one must avoid foods like eggs
and saturated fat to protect ones heart. Eggs are an incredible source
of high-quality protein and fatnutrients that many are deficient in.
Eggs are a nearly ideal fuel source for most of us. The evidence clearly
shows that eggs are one of the most healthful foods one can eat, and
can actually help prevent disease, including heart disease.
As for how to eat your eggs for optimal health, ideally the yolks should
be consumed raw, as the heat will damage many of the highly
perishable nutrients in the yolk. Additionally, the cholesterol in the yolk
can be oxidized with high temperatures, especially when it is in
contact with the iron present in the whites and cooked, as in
scrambled eggs, and such oxidation contributes to chronic
inflammation in your body.

Some Politically Incorrect Thoughts, perhaps
I feel strongly against a faulty belief system,
that is a belief system based on false
premises. Every day I see persons caught
up in the Victimization Trap who see
themselves as helpless victims of an unjust
world. They are doomed to failure or
mediocrity because they believe they
cannot change anything in their lives.
Civil rights are the foundation of a civilised
society and should be strongly defended but sloth is poisonous. Sloth
is the desire for ease and whatever we do in life requires effort. A lot of
effort, for example, is required for a baby to learn how to walk.
Everything we do is to be a means of salvation, if you are religious, or a
better life, if you are not. The slothful person is unwilling to do anything
because of the effort it takes to do it. Sloth becomes a sin when it slows
down and even brings to a halt the energy we must expend in using the
means to salvation. Medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas said Sloth is
sluggishness of the mind which neglects to begin good... [it] is evil in
its effect, if it so oppresses man as to draw him away entirely from good
deeds.
A human being is a creature of infinite desires, and it is quite acceptable
to want to fulfill as many of those desires as possible. However, one
should be aware that merely telling people that one wants something is
not likely to produce results.
Neither are ones desires a need. The transformation of a desire into
a need is an integral component of the Victimization Trap. One does
not need the newest gadgets or designers clothes. Need, of course,
is a subjective word and there is no such thing as an absolute need if
not for a roof over your head and food. One may think that one needs
a Ferrari; I may be content with a Fiat. Neither of us is right or wrong;
we merely have a difference of opinion.
However, if one desires a Ferrari, that is their business. It only becomes
my business if one arbitrarily decide that I have an obligation to buy it
for them on the grounds that its a need and that they are, therefore,
entitled to it. One has no moral right to force me to help them acquire
35
it just because they happen to want it. Western cultures accept the
belief that every individual has a right to an education, a right to a
good job, a right to a living wage, a right to decent housing, a
right to good healthcare, a right to virtually anything that a person
can establish as societys obligation to him.
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are the foundation of society.
They are non negotiable.
Healthcare and education should be free at the point of entry because
workers fund them through their taxes.
Those who work with pride and deliver services are entitled to a living
wage that will allow them to afford decent housing. It is not a gift but
a just reward.
We are witnessing an unprecedented attack on the working class and
there are politicians who claim that force and fraud are easily justified on
the grounds that such measures are necessary to make certain that
peoples rights are not violated, i.e., to make certain their individual
desires are fulfilled. They say that, in order to fulfill the perceived rights
of one person, another persons right to their liberty is violated, because
any product or service that an individual may desire must be produced
by someone else.
They clamour against artificial rights to give undeserving people what
they wants in life and claim that, on the contrary, one can get everything
one wants, easier, faster, and in far greater abundance, without using
government force to make others give it to you.
They attack the benefit culture and repeat ad nauseam and without
proof that the populace scrounges off the state. They put into practice
Adolf Hitlers mantra: Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying
it, and eventually they will believe it.
The state is us. They are vultures who feed on the state. They will
grovel on your doorstep before elections and treat you with contempt
after they are in power.
Unfortunately, many are gullible and swallow the lies they are fed and
regurgitate them, at least until they are hit by one measure or the other.
By then it is too late to find a remedy.
The Bedroom Tax embodies the attack on the working class more than

any other measure concocted by an incompetent and arrogant
government. The Tories and their lackeys want us to believe that tenants
in Council Estates drain the public purse, that they live on benefits alone
as they do not work and sleep late into the morning whilst bankers
commute to work at dawn.
It would be perfectly acceptable for tenants to downsize. I know many
who would be happy with a one-bedroom flat. Unfortunately very few
such properties are available and people have no real prospect of
moving. They cannot afford to enter the private rental market with
spiralling rent increases and should not be shunted up Northin a crude
and populist cash cutting exercise. Ethnic and social cleansing has
always been in the Conservative DNA. Dame Shirley Porter refers.
The Bedroom Tax is not the same as the thoughtful reforms introduced
in the Local Housing Allowance system, in a way that respected and
protected tenants.
I was flabbergasted
when, recently, I
came across the
despicable graphic
on the left where the
LibDems accused
former Labour
Housing Minister Malcolm Wicks of planning to introduce a Bedroom
Tax as long ago as 2001. Malcolm used the word under occupation
for a pilot scheme that would offer financial incentives to people to
relocate to smaller and more appropriate properties. He was a man of
honour and competence who worked sensitively with older people
whose homes were no longer appropriate for their needs, but to which
they were often deeply attached.
The Bedroom Tax is a one of the most damaging and divisive policy to
date. It will be revised soon because the Government has already
embarked on another crusade of hatred against hords of Eastern
European ready to climb the white cliffs of Dover to pillage the UK.
How long before people come to their senses and remove unethical
politicians who think they are they can bend the law any which way
they please to protect their financial interests?

Foodbanks
In the House of Commons, on 18 December
2013, MPs held a critical debate on the rise
of food bank use and the increase in hunger
levels in the UK today.
The Labour Party used Opposition Day to
discuss the food bank petition that Jack
Monroe launched with the Daily Mirror and
Unite the Union: it gained an astonishing
100,000 signatures in just two days,
demonstrating an overwhelming strength of public feeling.
Tory and LibDem MPs banded together to defeat Labours motion,
calling on the Government to reduce dependency on food banks,
by 294 votes to 251, a majority of 43.
Croydon MPs, Gavin Barwell and Richard Ottaway were part of that
majority. Shame.
Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan
Smith had already ducked questions in the
Commons by choosing not to speak,
instead putting forward his deputy Esther
McVey. In an ill-judged speech, she said:
It is positive that people are reaching out to support other
people.... In the UK it is right that more people are going to food
banks because as times are tough, we are all having to pay back
this 1.5trillion debt personally. We are all trying to live within our
means, change the gear and make sure that we pay back all our
debt. Shame.
The reader who could not follow the debate live, can hear it on
http://www.bbc.co.uk/democracylive/house-of-commons-25431723
It is a circus of shouting and jeering people who forget they were elected
to serve. The public pays for their food, their second homes, light bulbs
and crisps. They are still fiddling their expenses. Shame.
After one hour, the Governments side looked depleted. IDS scuttled out
after one hour, 2 minutes and 13 seconds. Shame.

From http://www.trusselltrust.org/
Care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers, CAB and police
identify people in crisis and issue them with a foodbank voucher. Foodbanks
partner with a wide range of care professionals who are best placed to assess
need and make sure that it is genuine. Foodbank clients take their voucher to a
foodbank centre where it can be redeemed for three days emergency food.
Volunteers meet clients over a cup of tea or free hot meal and are able to signpost
people to agencies able to solve the longer-term problem.
Food bank use in the South East, the region known for its wealth and relative
prosperity, is up over 60% this year.
A decade ago, food banks were almost unheard of in the UK. The Trussell Trust,
the UKs largest network of food banks, now opens new food banks in Britain
every week to cope with the increase in referrals.
The Government commissioned a report into the rise in food bank use in June
this year. DEFRA investigated, and the Government are refusing to publish the
report.
Some people who are in full time work are using food banks to support
themselves and their families. Many of these work zero hour contracts people
are employed, but can work little or no hours in a week. They have no financial
stability, and are not guaranteed enough to pay their rent, bills, or buy food.
Figures from the Trussell Trust show that changes to the benefit system are the
most common cause for food bank use in Britain. Nearly a third had been referred
after benefits had been delayed, and a further 19% due to their benefits being
cut or stopped.
Food banks dont just hand out emergency food, they also provide other
essentials such as nappies, formula milk and sanitary towels.
Food banks do not encourage a cycle of dependency. Molly Hodson from the
Trussell Trust says: Our food banks are different to American and Canadian food
banks, they are an emergency service. Where there is a welfare provision, nobody
should be at a point where they cant put food on the table long term. We help
people out of poverty by working with local agencies and charities for example if
someone has debt problems, we put them in touch with a debt counselling charity.
We want to help resolve the issues, and make sure people have a route out of
poverty.
Thousands of families face the prospect of relying on emergency food handouts
this Christmas. Shame.

Turmeric
Herbs and spices, which should be
unprocessed and organic, enhance
and optimise our food.
One amazing benefit of these herbs is
that they are very low in calories, while
being dense in vitamins and minerals.
They are also thermogenic, which means
that they naturally support our metabolism
to help you burn calories. One feels satisfied
more easily, so one eats less. Studies also show
that consuming certain herbs and spices before each meal can
potentially reduce our caloric intake.
Due to their nutrient-dense status, herbs promote our overall well-
being with antioxidants more potent than many fruits and vegetables.
Synthetically processed herbs and spices are a waste of our money
and health. We select and consume unprocessed organic foods and
should do the same with herbs and spices.
If the herb or spice we are looking for is processed or not organically
grown, we miss out on their most potent active ingredients, which
provide us with optimal benefits. If the herb or spice is not cultivated,
harvested, produced, and packaged using certified organic processes,
we do not get its healthful active ingredients.
Ayurveda
India is the home of Ayurveda, recognised as an authoritative source
of knowledge and truth in natural health promotion: herbs and spices
lie at the very heart of Ayurvedic practice.
Ancient Indian Turmeric
The Ayurvedic holistic approach and organic processes work in
unison. Turmeric provides you with these whole-person benefits:
Supports your healthy joint function
Promotes your radiant skin
Helps improve your digestion
Thousands of years ago, people in India and China used the spice. In
fact, some stories suggest usage dates back 10,000 years in India
when they say Lord Rama walked the earth.
43
The ancient Polynesians carried turmeric with them on their incredible
voyage across the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii. Today, Hawaiians still use
this spice, which they call Olena.
While in China, Marco Polo in 1280 AD recorded information on
turmeric in his diary: There is also a vegetable which has all the
properties of true saffron, as well the smell and the color, and yet it is
not really saffron.
So, turmeric has been used as a substitute for saffron (an old world
spice) in Europe for over 700 years.
One of the main healthful ingredients in turmeric is curcumin, which
gives turmeric its yellow color. Western scientists first isolated the
curcumin molecule in 1815, obtained its crystalline form in 1870, and
determined its overall structure in 1910.
Curcumin can potentially benefit you by:
Promoting your immune system
Helping you maintain your healthy digestive system
Supporting your healthy bones, joints, and overall skeletal system
Helping you maintain cholesterol levels that are already within the
normal range
Promoting your healthy blood and liver functions
Turmeric and Curcumin Provide Antioxidant Nutrients
Antioxidants are important for our health and are our body's number
one way to neutralize free radicals and help us potentially slow down
the signs of normal aging.
Oxidation by free radicals can damage cells and organs and thus
impact our aging process.
Antioxidants are also key nutrients in:
Supporting our memory function
Promoting our heart health
Supporting our immune system
Turmeric's antioxidants help protect our cells from free radical damage.
The antioxidant content within turmeric comes from active compounds
called curcuminoids.
These curcuminoids deliver antioxidants that may be 3 times more
powerful than grape seed or pine bark extract
Speaking of antioxidant nutrients and their potential to impact the
aging process, some of the first aging signs you may see as you get
older are changes to your skin. The organic ingredients found in
turmeric can help promote your healthy skin because curcuminoids
support important blood and liver functions, healthy joints, and your
overall well-being, which in turn helps promote radiant, supple skin.
Turmeric has been considered to be skin food' for thousands of years
in India and other cultures.
Turmeric helps:
Cleanse your skin and maintain its elasticity
Provide nourishment to your skin
Balance the effects of skin flora
Turmeric in India's Ayurvedic Practice
Turmeric, like other herbs and spices, is a principle herb in Ayurveda.
Ayurveda means knowledge of life. It has multiple uses within
Ayurveda, including blood cleansing and maintaining healthy skin.
In Ayurvedic terminology, turmeric includes the following:
Verdana sthapana promotes our healthy nervous system and helps
us with occasional discomfort
Sangrahani supports our absorption of vitamins and minerals
Anulomana helps us in purging out wastes and building healthy
blood
Rakta stambhaka promotes the wellness of your circulatory system
Simply, turmeric has been used in Indian culture for thousands of years
for a multitude of health-promoting reasons. An estimated 500 million
Indians still use the spice today.
How to buy turmeric
The turmeric powder you buy in your store is a spice. It doesn't
necessarily come from high-quality organic herbs and is not produced
using certified organic processes, causing you to risk missing its
healthful benefits.
Furthermore, one will probably just use the turmeric bought in store
once in a while to cook with and not on a daily basis to take advantage
of the benefits it offers.
If you wish to buy organic turmeric, you might want to browse

Beware of products with questionable ingredients like fillers, additives,
and excipients. An excipient is a substance added to the supplement
as a processing or stability aid. One ingredient, magnesium stearate
(also known as stearic acid), is a potentially toxic metal additive from
pill production. Another ingredient in many turmeric supplements,
Dibasic Calcium Phosphate (DCP), may even inhibit the absorption of
essential minerals within your system.
How to use fresh turmeric
Fresh turmeric roots are sold
in oriental markets. When
purchasing fresh amba
haldi, make sure it is firm,
smooth and free of mould. It
is generally available in two
forms, either young or
mature. Fresh turmeric is
pleasantly mild and does not
have a sharp bite. On the
other hand, it has a very
loud color - deeply orange inside an orange-tinged beige-brown skin.
Turmeric is much smaller than ginger and has a distinct flavor, very
pleasing, though delicate. Another variety, known by some as white
turmeric, is consumed by Southeast Asians and is available from some
of their markets during late spring and summer. Its flesh is a lighter
color than common turmeric; its flavor, however, is not as subtle, and
some roots can be quite pungent. Southeast Asian cultures not only
cook with this turmeric but eat the young roots raw or blanched,
dipped in spicy sauces.
Peel the fresh turmeric gently with a peeler. Cut off both the ends and
place it upright. Cut it into half from the centre. Cut the half portion into
another half and remove the seeds from centre. Chop by cutting them
in small pieces approximately inch in diameter. Remember to chop
gently without applying much pressure. Hands get stained yellow very
easily: take care while chopping and use gloves.
You can add sliced turmeric to a number of foods from salads to rice
or soups and juices.

New Year Resolution
Looking for a New Year resolution for you and your camera?
Christmas parties and dinners give plenty of scope for taking
natural pictures, the spontaneous, the informal and the
unrehearsed as well as the posed, of course; and the modern
digital cameras encourage you not to miss any opportunity and
not to wait for a possible repeat of a situation or a better one,
then, if the situation is repeated, more pics. can be taken and
those not wanted are easily disposed of at no cost. Not like the
days of film when, because of the cost, one tried to make every
exposure count make every one a good one.
Now we come to the New Year resolution. With the attractive
outdoor scenes which winter provides us with, I suggest that your
resolution be to exercise the discipline of making every shot count
not that the cost is affected but because it makes you analyse,
weigh up and review the situation before pressing the button. This
way you put to one side the emotional impact of a view and you
test the effect from different viewpoints and different levels
including or excluding certain features. What do you want to
capture ? What would it mean to any other viewer and, more
importantly, what does it mean to YOU ? You will probably find
this approach very satisfying and you will save the time normally
spent deciding which of your multitude of snaps to discard.
However if it is too cold and you do not wish to venture outside,
or would like to control the light more, and try a studio to create

READING
GROUP
FOR ADULTS
The group will discuss Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier on Thursday
16 December from 6 to 7pm.
It is a stunning story, compassionately reimagined. In real life Chevalier's heroine, Mary
Anning, was the greatest fossil-hunter ever. Her father was a not-very-successful
cabinet-maker whom Jane Austen once asked to mend a chest, but his estimate was
too high. Austen looked elsewhere, never knowing that the artisan she briefly met was
teaching his gifted daughter to find the "curies", the fossil curiosities sold to Lyme
tourists like herself.
As a young child, Mary survived a lightning strike, which people said made her strange
and extra bright. She had an uncanny gift for finding fossils, was the origin of the
tongue-twister "She Sells Sea Shells on the Sea Shore", and in 1811 when she was 12
(Darwin was two) her first big find, a "crocodile" later named ichthyosaurus, rocked
the scientific world. She unearthed a plesiosaurus in 1823, a pterodactyl in 1828 and
a squaloraja (a transition fish, between sharks and rays) in 1829.
Scientists were knocking at Mary's impoverished family's door from 1811. Even before
Richard Owen coined the word dinosaur, "terrible lizard", in 1824, giant fossils were a
hot scientific topic. Several male scientists owed their achievements to Mary's finds. She
taught herself geology and anatomy and worked out, with the Oxford geologist William
Buckland, that lumps known as bezoar stones were actually dinosaur faeces. To raise
money for Mary, one patron, Colonel Birch, auctioned the fossils she helped him find.
Later the French scientist Cuvier accused Mary of fraud, a charge she successfully
rebutted. She died unmarried at 47, with the respect of the international scientific
community.
Chevalier, however, has two heroines, two voices. Mary is the young one, the
uneducated girl with lightning in her bones, who reacts to everything by instinct. It is
the older woman whose voice dominates the novel. Elizabeth Philpot was also a
historical character and her situation at the start of Chevalier's novel is familiar from
Austen: that of a middle-class spinster sent away by a married brother to live more
cheaply elsewhere. By Ruth Padel, The Guardian, Saturday 29 August 2009

STOP the Monsanto frankenseed factory
Dear friends,
Monsanto's extending its power over the globe, with a massive
new frankenseed factory in Argentina. Sofa Gatica and local
neighbours have spoken out, and she has received death
threats and a brutal beating. The threat is urgent: let's stand
with them and stop the plant.
Monsanto manufactures the genetically modified seeds that,
when combined with toxic pesticides, create the devastating
'monocultures' - where nothing grows but a single plant - that
increasingly cover our planet. Now they plan to build one of the
world's largest GM seed factories in Malvinas.
Sofa, worried about health risks from the plant, has joined the
protests, backed by nearly 70% of the area's residents. If 1
million of us join the people of Malvinas in the next 3 days, we
can raise the profile of the issue in local media, feature the
petition in an ad campaign, and push the unpopular Argentine
President to shut down the plant and roll back the spread of
Monsanto's toxic agriculture.
Sofia and the people of Malvinas have been lying in front of
bulldozers to block the construction of the plant. If we can
amplify their protest, we can help them win.
President Kirchner is facing a wave of unpopularity right now,
and she can't afford to be seen to be choosing Monsanto's
profits over her own people.
The mega-plant will use toxic chemicals to engineer seeds,
which sounds weird because seeds are supposed to come from
plants right?
Not in Monsanto's scary new world, where plants are
genetically designed to be sterile, and the only way farmers can
keep planting food is by buying seeds every year from
Monsanto! In the US, up to 90% of some types of crops are
55
56
planted with Monsanto seeds, and with its new mega-plant in
Argentina, the infamous company is extending its power over
the globe.
The threats and beating of Sofa and her fellow protesters are
the last straw. Let's stop Monsanto's invasion of South America,
and start rolling back the devastation wreaked on our
ecosystems by their products.
Some argue that genetic modification holds great promise for
increased agricultural efficiency. There may be many such
benefits in the future, but often the gains are hyped by
corporate PR (such as the line that GM seeds 'feed the world' by
being far more productive than normal seeds - in fact there's
little evidence of that), and GM technologies often put profit
over people and planet.
Governments should adjudicate the public risks and benefits,
but Monsanto is skilled in undermining democratic
governance. They even passed a law in the US that says that a
judge cannot order a recall of Monsanto products, even on
grounds of public safety!
Our planet is being rapidly transformed by genetically
modified, industrial agriculture, and our governments are far
too heavily influenced by the American mega-corporation at
the center of it all -- a corporation that is gradually coming to
control the world's food supply.
Let's not force our children and grandchildren to deal with a
world fed by Monsanto; we can stop it now.
