Most club members know that each year
TRRC or gani zes t he Manhat t an t o
Peekskill Super Road Runners Shop Road
Relay. What most probably don't know is
that several years ago the Plainview-Old
Bethpage Running Club came to our road
relay, liked what they saw, and went home
to Long Island to start their own 50-mile
team relay. This year, the Scotland bound
Taconic Racing Team took their show on
the road to remind the other 135 8-person
teams just where their roots lie.
What the racing eight (plus excellent
support team) found was a race of
grander proportions but , like the old
saying, "You don't know what you've got
until it's gone," we found ourselves missing
the intimate setting of Manhattan to
Peekski l l . That' s not to say that
POBPRRC didn't pull off a miracle of
organization with trafc control and the
like, but we missed the charms of home.
At any rate, the TRRC sent the best eight
a v a i l a b l e : f r o m t h e A Te a m B r i a n
Wynne, Doug Miller, Bemie Dietrick,
Steve Calidonna, Ron Herreid and Bob
Hermesch. Rounding out the octet were
1st and 2nd alternates Paul Fendler and
Pat MacDonald. Support crew Tom
Church and Joan Dietrick completed the
entourage.
On to the race - the boys did the club
proud. Donning the new racing logo,
designed by Joan Dietrick and donated by
the team members for the trip to
Scotland, Brian Wyime put the TRRC
into 6th position with a ne rst leg battle
agai nst nati onal cl ass rui mer Al
Swenson. Doug Miller and Bernie
Dietrick inched the TRRC into 5th place
over the next two legs. Steve Calidoima
pulled into fourth with a workman like
effort and handed off to Pat MacDonald
as the race really heated up. The Witold
Runners had used their best early and the
even strength of TRRC was starting to
show as they reeled in third place with

Right behind in fth. Pat was up to the
t ask and wast ed hi s Wi t ol d f oe. Wi t h ve
legs completed, TRRC was third. Paul
Fendler took off on the sixth leg and
stretched the l ead over Wi tol d, but
Warren Street was showing their strength
as they closed in on the Northern
Westchester runners. The seventh leg saw
Ron Herreid desperately clinging to third
place as Warren Street, relentlessly in
pursuit, overtook him for third place.
Even battling Bob Hermesch's ne
performance wasn't enough to get TRRC
back into third on the anchor leg, but
there was nothing to hang our heads
about as we garnered an unforeseen
fourth place nish!
Overall, the ne individual performances
helped the team hone its competitive
skills. We were encouraged to nd that
we were competitive in the "larger
picture," given ie number and scope of
the teams. Best of all, we think we*re
sending out a message and a challenge to
all comers: The Taconic Racing Team is
a force to be reckoned with!
