OnSaturdayFeb.22,theNationalHistoryDay(NHD)contesttookplaceatSIS.Studentsfromvarious
internationalschoolssuchasSIS,KoreaInternationalSchool(KIS),andKoreaKentForeignSchool
(KKFS)cametogethertopresentvariousdocumentsandresearchpapersbasedonthisyearsthemeof
RightsandResponsibilities,anditwasuptothestudentstochooseatopicbasedonthetheme.

TheNHDisfirstintroducedearlyonintheschoolyear,wherestudentsaregivenapresentationonthe
eventingeneral,includingthetheme.Studentsaregivenafewweeksbeforethedeadlinetosignupand
severalmonthstocompletealloftheirresearchanddocumentaries,papers,oracts.

ItookpartinNHDforthepastthreeyearsbecauseIthoughtitwouldbeaninterestingexperiencefor
me,saidHarryLee(11),winnerofthe2013NHD.I'vegainedquiteanamountofsuperficialhistorical
informationbooksbeforehandbutnevermadeanyusewiththeknowledge.IthoughtNHDwouldbea
nicechallengeformetoactuallyapplythatknowledgeintoaproduct.

NHDinKoreawasanideathatwasproposedbytwoSISstaffmembers,TonyandShannaHurt.The
Hurtsareleavingtheirpositionsashistoryteachersthisyear,butthroughouttheyears,anincreasing
numberofstudentsarebeginningtotakepartofthisevent.

IdecidedtoparticipatethisyearbecauseIwantedtogainmoreacademicexperienceasastudentandto
tryworkingwithdiversegroupsofpeople.ThiswasthefirsttimeIveworkedasateamtocreatea
documentaryonConfucianism.saidJeffreyPark(9),participantofNHD.

Withatotaloffourvariations,NHDisdividedintotwodivisions:theJuniorandSeniorDivisions.Within
thesedivisionsaredifferentwaysofentries.Studentsareallowedtoworkindividuallyoringroups
dependingonhowtheydecidedtopresenttheirwork.Forexample,Jeffreychosetoparticipateinthe
SeniorDivisionforGroupDocumentaryFilms,withhisteammates,GraceLee(9),DavidChoe(9),and
JulieHwang(9).

Iwouldrecommendthatparticipantsfinishtheirresearchassoonaspossible,especiallybecausejudges
expectalotofprimarysources,saidJaewonChoi(11),participantofNHD.Also,whenchoosingthe
topic,theyshouldmakesurethattheyareactuallypassionateaboutitandwillingtoputinthehoursof
effortnecessary.

Thisupcomingautumn,thehistorydepartmentisplanningtohostitsfourthannualNationalHistoryDay.
Thecontinuoussuccessoftheeventinthepastandincreaseinstudentsparticipationovertheyearsisa
clearexampleofhowinteresttowardshistoryisgrowinginSIScommunity.
