1865
Civil war ended.
1909
NAACD faught for civil rights for
blacks.
1954
Civil rights movement won its
first major victory.
1955
14 year old Emmit Till was
kidnaped, beaten, shot, and
dumped in a river for whistling
at a white woman.
1955
Rosa Parks refused to give up
her seat on the bus to a white
person. The police officer that
took her to jail didnt know why
whites treated blacks so badly.
Late 1950's
MLK organized a group
dedicated to peaceful civil
rights activities.
1956
Busses got desegragrated.
1957
White people resisted change
and rioted at a high school
when the first black students
enrolled to go to school there.
1960's
Civil rights movement groups
began using a form of protest
where they sat down in a place
they knew they would not get
served.
1961
A group of people called the
Congress Of Racial Equality
began sponsering freedom rides
through the south, some blacks
were beaten or arrested for
participating in this activity.
1962
MLK gets arrested for
"Parading without a permit" in
an effort to boost the dying
campaign.
1962
James Meredith became the
first black student to enroll at
the University of Mississippi.
President Kennedy had to send
5,000 federal troops to control
the violence of the scene.
1963
The march on Washington was
for freedom and jobs, where
MLK deivered his speach "I
have a dream." More than
250,000 people gathered that
day.
1964-1965
Civil rights movement won
major victories and passed off
many new laws wich increased
the number of black voters.
1967
Some blacks formed groups
willing to use violence to win
racial justice.

1968
MLK was assasinated while
standing on the balcony of a
hotel. His death ended civil
rights movements. he died April
fourth in Memphis Tennesse, at
age 39.
