Background/Predictions

Experiment 1
Seeing as how the purpose of the lab is to investigate the relationship between
instantaneous speed and average speed for a cart on a rack, we can predict that the gates mounted
on the rack will help to calculate the time it takes the cart to travel the measured length between
the two. If the distance traveled and the time is known, one can calculate the average speed. With
this information, a graph can be drawn showing the relationship between the distance between
the two gates and the average speed of the cart in each trial
Experiment 2
Experiment 2 will be an extension of the last experiment, since it also uses the motion
sensor that was provided for the previous lab. Since the graph that we are asked to match is of
velocity vs. time, instead of position vs. time, I predict that matching the graph given will be
more difficult as the slope of the line is determined by acceleration, not by distance away from
the sensor.
