African black rhinoceros was extinguished

Red List of Threatened Species compiled by the International Union for Conservation of Nature
(IUCN) "officially extinct" African black rhino appears. The cause: excessive hunting to sell their
horns on the black market.
The species, scientific name (Diceros bicornis longipes) measured 1.6 meters tall and weighed
1,500 kilos.
The black rhino joins the sad story of going extinct Tasmanian tiger to the Arabian gazelle or
wallaby Grey.
In the list of endangered species is also listed as "possibly extinct" another rhino, white rhino of
Central Africa ( Ceratotherium simum cottoni ). And experts warn that the Javan rhinoceros
(Rhinoceros sondaicus ) could follow the same path.
"Human beings are the guardians of the earth and we are responsible for protecting the species
that share our environment" said Simon Stuart , Chair of the Species Survival Commission of IUCN.
"For both the Western black rhino and the northern white rhino, the situation could have been
very different from the suggested conservation measures have been implemented" he added.
The organization has also indicated that, despite conservation programs, 25% of mammals are
presently endangered .
