Design Brief
Client: Mrs. Simpson
Designer: Leonard LeNair Vance
Problem Statement: The amount of the bridge is
the most important aspect of creating it. The
cheaper and more stable it is the better. The
problem is finding a way to make it cheaper and
also able to hand the weight of a truck driving
across it which out it falling apart.

Design Statement: Design, model, and test a
cost efficient bridge thats cheap as possible
and sustain the weight of a truck driving across
it.

Constraint:
Limited amount of time
Has to be close to or around $171,008.86
Truck can cross without it falling apart

Conclusion Questions:

1. How does the type and direction of
stress applied affect the
selection of the material type and
the cross-sectional are?

The type and direction of stress is
directly related to the material type and
the cross-sectional area. If a member will
be under compression, a solid member is
more ideal. Vise-versa, a hallow member is
better suited for tension conditions

2. How can the forces of
compression and tension work
together to make a stronger
bridge?

As long as the net force on the bridge
equal zero, the bridge is strengthened.
If the net force does not equal zero,
the bridge will be significantly
weakened.
