WHAT IS NEURO LINGUISTIC
PROGRAMMING?

NEURO refers to how our mind perceive the information
through our five senses
( Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, Olfactory, Gustatory)

LINGUISTIC refers to how we understand and interpret
information through verbal and nonverbal communication

PROGRAMMING refers to how we re-present the perceived
message in our mind and how it manifests into behaviour.

HISTORY OF NLP
RICHARD BANDLER JOHN GRINDER

NLP was initially created in early 1970s by
Richard Bandler, a student of mathematics, and
John Grinder, a professor of linguistics at The
University of California in Santa Cruz. They
began modeling and duplicating the "magical
results" of a few extraordinary therapists of that
time: hypnotherapist Milton Erickson, gestalt
therapist Fritz Perls and family therapist Virginia
Satir.

NLP MODELS
After studying extraordinary people ,
Richard Bandler and John Grinder created
the following models
Meta Model
Milton Model
Modeling Excellence
META MODELS
I f thoughts can corrupt language, language
can also corrupt thought. George Orwell
Meta-modeling in NLP is the process of
carefully questioning the distortions that
occur in natural language with the intent of
helping someone develop new choice in
thinking and behavior.

META MODEL
For example, if someone says, "Everyone must love
me" the message is overly general as it does not
specify any particular person or group of people.
That is, the sentence is semantically ill-formed. It
therefore raises the question, "Which people,
specifically?".

Meta model consist of 3 categories and 13
patterns
The three categories are a. DELETION, b.
GENERALISATION and c. DISTORTION
a. Deletion: We leave some aspects because we
do not have the words to express them, or because
we think them less important and yet others
because we just did not notice them at the time
Examples for Deletion
Mistakes were made
Who made the mistake?

I created a great impression on her
How exactly did you do that?

b. Generalization
We generalize when we take an example to represent
a whole group. For example we see how our parents
treat each other and take that as the model of how
men and woman live together.
Generalization is the basis of learning, our beliefs are
generalization
Generalization Examples
Everyone is laughing at me
You mean everyone is laughing at you?

I always make a mess of it.
What every single time? There has never ever been a
time when you didnt make a mess of it?

c. Distortion
Distortion is how we change our experience. We can
distort in many ways, we can make it larger, smaller,
more dilute, more concentrate, we can blow it out of
proportion.
Distortion like deletion neither good nor bad. It
depends on what and how you distort. Distortion can
make you unhappy and paranoid. It is also the basis
for creativity, artistic talents.
Examples for Distortion
Presupposition, refers to an assumption
whereby the truth is taken for granted.
My husband is as lazy as my son."
Presuppositions: You have a husband; you
have a son; your son is lazy.
Challenge: "Am I to assume that your son
is lazy?"

Examples for Distortion

Cause-effect, the inappropriate use of causal
thinking (x means y, x makes me y, or x makes
y happen)
"Being late means she does not love me."
Challenge: "How specifically, does her being late
mean she does not love you?"
Mind-reading occurs when someone claims to
think they know what another is thinking
without verification.

Start with yourself!
Start by using Meta model on your own internal
dialogue, notice how you create your internal
reality with the words you say to yourself.
Use the meta model on what you say aloud as well.
If you are not clear in your mind about what you
are saying, then how will other people understand
you.
MILTON MODEL
UNCONSCIOUS & CONSCIOUS MIND
Unconscious mean anything that is not in
present moment awareness. It deals with
all deep life-sustaining functions and all
the thought process that break through
into the conscious mind like bubbles
bursting on the surface of a pool
The conscious mind is what we are aware
of
All our skills are carried out in unconscious
competence. The conscious mind is hardly
skilled at all.
The unconscious seems to be the domain of
emotions. It is hard to make yourself feel
emotion consciously.
The unconscious responds to symbols and
metaphors rather than language and it does not
process negatives e.g. Dont do X and Do X
are the same to the unconscious because X is
represented in both
TRANCE
How do we access the unconscious
resources? Through a state of trance
Trance is a state of consciousness with an
internal focus of attention.
Trance is also a kind of hypnotic state
MILTON MODEL

The Milton model is a way of communicating
based on the hypnotic language patterns of
Milton Erickson(1901 1980). It has been
described as "a way of using language to induce
and maintain trance in order to contact the
hidden resources of our personality". There are
three Phases of the Milton model:
First, Pacing a persons experience and leading
them into an altered state( trance)

MILTON MODEL
Second, to overload and distract the conscious
mind so that unconscious communication can be
cultivated.
Third, accessing the unconscious mind of the
client. Furthermore, communicating with
metaphor was an essential part of Milton's
methods providing a platform whereby Erickson
could smoothly deliver his therapeutic
suggestions

MODELING EXCELLENCE
Unlike some other schools of psychotherapeutic
thought, which concentrate on how problems
arise, NLP started from studying people who are
exceptionally good at what they do, and finding
out how they do it so that anyone can get
similar results by doing the same things
It aims to move beyond remedial change( fixing
specific problem) to generative change which
allows you to adopt new empowering beliefs and
to achieve more in every area of your life

NLP TECHNIQUES AND
PATTERNS
Establishing rapport through non-verbal
communication
Anchoring
Swish Patterns
ESTABLISHING RAPPORT THROUGH
NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION

Mirroring: You follow your clients actions
as if you were looking in a mirror
Matching: When your client crosses his
right leg over the left leg, you would
match him if you cross over your right leg
over your left leg as well.

PACING AND LEADING NON-
VERBAL COMMUNICATION
Different behaviors you can Mirror and Match
Head tilting, facial expression, eye contact, rate
of blinking, weight distribution, breathing,
gestures etc
Lock On when you pace your client long
enough, soon it becomes automatic and lock
on and after which you lead the client

MISMATCHING
Have you ever had someone go on and on when
having a conversation with them, when you
wondered if they will ever stop talking ?
To stop them you can break eye contact, turn
your body at an angle to them, breathe faster or
slower in contrast to their breathing. In short do
anything to break the rapport by mismatching

ANCHORING
Anchoring is one of the most useful NLP
techniques.
Anchoring is a process where by any internal or
external stimulus becomes a trigger that elicits a
response
This can happen at random in the course of
living or it can be deliberate
Anchors may stimulate an action like stopping at
a red light or may change our emotional states.

TYPES OF ANCHOR
Emotional freedom comes from being
aware of the anchors you have and
choosing to respond only to the ones you
want.
Examples of
Visual anchors: National flag,
Advertisement
Auditory anchors: Your name, Music

TYPES OF ANCHOR
Kinesthetic anchors: Comfortable chair, a
bath or shower
Olfactory anchors: Smell of newly baked
bread, smell of a hospital
Gustatory: Taste of coffee, taste of your
favourite food
FOUR STEPS TO ANCHOR
Have a person recall a vivid and
resourceful experience
Anchor the resourceful state just at the
peak
Break state
Fire of the anchor to test
THE SWISH PATTERNS
The Swish is a technique that uses sub
modalities change. It changes unwanted
behaviour or habits by establishing a new
direction
It is very effective technique for eliminating
negative thought cycles as well as dealing with
certain compulsive behaviour like nail biting,
smoking, eating certain foods or habits.
