Teacher: Seema Naudiyal WARNING Factoring is easy but it needs to be conscious in it and do not forget any step from the steps because it have many steps that can confuse you . STEP 1 First step is to factor the greatest common factor (GCF) and GCF means : The highest number that divides exactly into two or more numbers. STEP 2 Count the number of terms , because there is special ways to factor the two terms expression (binomial) , three terms expression (trinomial) , and the four terms expression (polynomial) . STEP 3 If it was 2 terms expression (binomial) check if you can factor it as difference of two squares : a^2-b^2=(a-b)(a+b) or a perfect square : (a+b)^2 = a^2+ 2ab +b^2 STEP 4 If it was 3 terms expression (trinomial) check if it was quadratic trinomial: a^2+bx+c if it was a quadratic trinomial make axc if the sum of it become equal to b it can be factor , if it was not equal it cannot be factored , if it was not a quadratic trinomial solve it as step 1 by factoring the GCF STEP 5 If it was a 4 terms expression (polynomial) use the grouping method , by taking the first two numbers and factor them , then take the second two numbers and factor them and make them in two brackets . REAL LIFE EXAMPLES The length of Rebecca's rectangular garden was two times the width w. Rebecca increased the length and width of the garden so that the area of thew garden is (2w^2+7w+6) square yard. By how much did Rebecca increase the length and the width. REAL LIFE EXAMPLES the length of a rectangular porch is (x+7)ft . The area of the porch is (x^2 + 9x + 14)ft^2 . Find the width of the porch. You are given a sheet of paper and told to cut out a rectangular piece with an area of (4x^2- 44x+121)mm^2. The dimensions of the rectangle have the form ax-b. where a and b are whole numbers. Find an expression for the perimeter of the rectangle you cut out. Find the perimeter when x=41mm.
