SERBIAN CULTURE IN THE INTERWAR PERIOD Summary
Serbian culture of the interwar period was characterized with creation of cultur
al institutions, emergence of new artistic movements, interaction between tradit
ional and modern, as well as the wide participation of educated public in cultur
al activities and in consumption of works of art In this period Serbian culture
reached its heights in literature, music, architecture, painting, theater and s
cience Serbian cinema, as a new artistic medium of modern times, made its rst st
eps Performing in music and drama was considerably improved in comparison with
the prewar times Art was supported more vehemently by the state institutions, b
ut also by social groups and enthusiasts Social milieu in which Serbian culture
was developing after the war was colored with foreign in uences Russian emigrati
on and Serbian intellectuals educated in France, and characterized with partici
pation of artists and performers from all parts of Yugoslavia All those in uences
became parts of the Serbian cultural scene
