Lulz Security, commonly abbreviated as LulzSec, was a black hat computer hacker

group that claimed responsibility for several high profile attacks, including th
e compromise of user accounts from Sony Pictures in 2011. The group also claimed
responsibility for taking the CIA website offline. Some security professionals
have commented that LulzSec has drawn attention to insecure systems and the dang
ers of password reuse. It has gained attention due to its high profile targets a
nd the sarcastic messages it has posted in the aftermath of its attacks. One of
the founders of LulzSec was a computer security specialist who used the online m
oniker Sabu.
The group used the motto "Laughing at your security since 2011!"
Anonymous (used as a mass noun) is a loosely associated international network of

nt Bashar al-Assad. Using denial of service attacks, defacement, and other metho
ds, it mainly targets political opposition groups and western websites, includin
g news organizations and human rights groups. The Syrian Electronic Army is the
first public, virtual army in the Arab world to openly launch cyber attacks on i
ts opponents, though the precise nature of its relationship with the Syrian gove
rnment is unclear.

Milw0rm is a group of "hacktivists" best known for penetrating the computers of
the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Mumbai, the primary nuclear research
facility of India, on June 3, 1998. The group conducted hacks for political rea
sons, including the largest mass hack up to that time, inserting an anti-nuclear
weapons agenda and peace message on its hacked websites. The group's logo featu
red the slogan "Putting the power back in the hands of the people."
The BARC attack generated heated debate on the security of information in a worl
d prevalent with countries developing nuclear weapons and the information necess
ary to do so, the ethics of "hacker activists" or "hacktivists," and the importa
nce of advanced security measures in a modern world filled with people willing a
nd able to break into insecure international websites.
