Poetry Project- 6th Grade Language Arts

For the next three weeks you will be working on a poetry project. The project will
demonstrate your understanding of the material learned in class. Your poetry project is a
MAJOR GRADE. You must plan your time for the next few weeks so that everything
will be completed on schedule. Late projects will be accepted one day late with the
maximum grade of a 70.

1. You are to read 15 poems and keep a log of the poems you have read. You may
NOT count poems we read as a class and you may not count more than 3 poems
by the same poet. I want you to read as many poems as possible in the next few
weeks. Extra credit will be given if you read more than 15 poems. Extra credit
may NOT exceed 25 points.
2. Use your poetry vocabulary (personification, alliteration, onomatopoeia, simile,
metaphor, pure rhyme) to choose your poems for the project. You must have at
least one example of each vocabulary word.
3. A. You are to select your 6 favorite poems from all the poems you have read for
this assignment and copy or type onto unlined paper. Please write one poem per
page. You may hand write, type, or print it on unlined paper. Do NOT make
copies of the poem on a copy machine. For each of the 6 poems you select write
a paragraph (5-7 sentences) explaining why that particular poem is one of your
favorites. Be specific in your writing. Do not say, “I like it because it is a good
poem.” Explain WHAT makes the poem interesting or special to you. You must
illustrate or decorate the pages with the poems.

B. You must present your work in booklet form. The cover must be decorated
and all pages must be neatly bound. Loose papers will not be accepted. Set up
your booklet with the following sections:
• Cover sheet including your name and Poetry Project 2009
• Table of Contents including titles of poems and poets
• Poetry Vocabulary and examples
• Favorite poems with paragraphs
• Bibliography
• Poetry Logs
