Syllabus for written examination

(1) For admissions in Ph.D. (course code 11,12,13, and 15) and M.Tech. (Part Time and
Sponsored)
i. Syllabus for written examination for admission in departments except
Applied Mechanics, HSS, SMS and GIS cell will be that of GATE-2013
examination in respective discipline (e.g. if you have applied for Mechanical
Engineering Department, the syllabus for written examination will be GATE-
2013 paper Mechanical Engineering, code ME).
ii. For admission in Department of Applied Mechanics, syllabus for written
examination will be GATE-2013 paper Engineering Sciences Code XE.
iii. For admission in GIS cell, question paper will comprise following two
sections. Section one will be compulsory and will be based on Engineering
Mathematics portion of GATE-2013 syllabus for Engineering Sciencecode
XE which is as given below:
Section A: Engineering Mathematics (Compulsory)
Linear Algebra: Algebra of matrices, inverse, rank, system of linear equations,
symmetric, skew-symmetric and orthogonal matrices. Hermitian, skew-
Hermitian and unitary matrices.eigenvalues and eigenvectors, diagonalisation
of matrices, Cayley-Hamilton Theorem.
Calculus: Functions of single variable, limit, continuity and differentiability,
Mean value theorems, Indeterminate forms and LHospital rule, Maxima and
minima,Taylors series, Fundamental and mean value-theorems of integral
calculus. Evaluation of definite and improper integrals, Beta and Gamma
functions, Functions of two variables, limit, continuity, partial derivatives,
Eulers theorem for homogeneous functions, total derivatives, maxima and
minima, Lagrange method of multipliers, double and triple integrals and their
applications, sequence and series, tests for convergence, power series,
Fourier Series, Half range sine and cosine series.
Complex variable: Analytic functions, Cauchy-Riemann equations, Application
in solving potential problems, Line integral, Cauchys integral theorem and
integral formula (without proof), Taylors and Laurent series, Residue
theorem (without proof) and its applications.
Vector Calculus: Gradient, divergence and curl, vector identities, directional
derivatives, line, surface and volume integrals, Stokes, Gauss and Greens
theorems (without proofs) applications.
Ordinary Differential Equations: First order equation (linear and nonlinear),
Second order linear differential equations with variable coefficients, Variation
of parameters method, higher order linear differential equations with
constant coefficients, Cauchy- Eulers equations, power series solutions,
Legendre polynomials and Bessels functions of the first kind and their
properties.
Partial Differential Equations: Separation of variables method,Laplace
equation, solutions of one dimensional heat and wave equations.
Probability and Statistics: Definitions of probability and simple theorems,
conditional probability, Bayes Theorem, random variables, discrete and
continuous distributions, Binomial, Poisson, and normal distributions,
correlation and linear regression.
Numerical Methods: Solution of a system of linear equations by L-U
decomposition, Gauss-Jordan and Gauss-Seidel Methods, Newtons
interpolation formulae, Solution of a polynomial and a transcendental
equation by Newton-Raphson method, numerical integration by trapezoidal
rule, Simpsons rule and Gaussian quadrature, numerical solutions of first
order differential equation by Eulers method and 4th order Runge-Kutta
method.
Section B:
This section will have three optional parts:
Option-1 will be for candidates who have qualifying degree in Civil
Engineering and it will be based on GATE-2013 paper code CE.
Option-2 will be for candidates who have qualifying degree in
Electronics Engineering and it will based on GATE-2013 paper code
EC and
Option-3 will be for candidates who have qualifying degree in
Computer Science and Engineering and it will be based on GATE-2013
paper code CS. Candidates have to attempt any one part of this
section.
(2) For admission in Ph.D. programme in School of Management Studies (SMS)
following is the syllabus:

Section I (40% weightage)

a. Quantitative aptitude: arithmetical ability, data interpretation, data sufficiency,
logical reasoning, commercial mathematics, elementary statistics, probability and
probability distributions.
b. Verbal ability: vocabulary, analogies and reverse analogies, verbal reasoning,
sentence correction.
c. General Management: marketing, organizational behaviour, managerial
economics, business environment, organizational development, operations
management basics.

Section II (60% weightage)
a. Basic accounting. Financial management. Advanced financial concepts.
Multinational finance. Derivatives and commodities. Project appraisal and
financing.
b. Strategic HRM. Industrial Relations. Human Resource Planning. International
HRD.
c. Internal and external environment analysis including BCG, GE Screen, ETOP,
SWOT. Corporate Governance. Change Management. Competitive Strategies.
d. Brand Management. Advertising and Sales. Consumer Behaviour. Marketing of
Services and Concepts.

(3) For admission to Ph.D. programme in Department of Humanities and Social
Sciences (HSS) following will be the syllabus for written examination:

(i) General Knowledge
(ii) General ability and reasoning

(4) Syllabus for written examination for admission in M.S.W. programme of
Department of Humanities and Social Sciences
(i) Reasoning and aptitude questions
(ii) Social problem and issues
(iii) Communication skills based questions
(iv) General knowledge
(v) Short essay writing
