Q1 Design a shaft for connecting a motor and a centrifugal pump shafts. The shaft needs to
transmit 15 KW at 1000 rpm. . Allowable tensile,compressive,shear stress for shaft are 60MPa ,
70MPa,40Mpa.

Q2. Design a typical cotter joint to transmit a load of 50 kN in tension or compression. Consider
that the rod, socket and cotter are all made of a material with the following allowable stresses:
Allowable tensile stress t = 150 MPa, Allowable crushing stress c = 110 MPa , Allowable
shear stress y = 110 MPa.

Q3. Design a hollow shaft to transmit 50 KW at 1000 rpm. shear stress 100MPa. Bending
moment 2000Nm. Service factor=1.35 outside dia/bore=2. (3 MARKS)
Q4 plate 70 mm wide and 18 mm thick is to be welded to another plate by
means of parallel fillet welds. The plates are subjected to a load of 70 kN. Find
the length of the weld. Assume allowable shear strength to be 76 MPa.(3 marks)
Q5 Two mild steel tie rods having width 400 mm and thickness 15 mm are
to be connected by means of a butt joint with double cover plates. Find the
number of rivets needed if the permissible stresses are 85 MPa in tension,
70 MPa in shear and 170 MPa in crushing.and also find efficiency
(3 MARKS)
Q6. Give Design Procedure For fork double eye single eye and pin .

Q7.A line shaft is driven by means of a motor placed vertically below it.the pulley on line shaft
is 1.5 m in diameter and has belt tension 5.4KN and 1.8 KN on tight side and slack side of belt
respectively. both these tensions may be assumed to be vertical. if the pulley be overhung from
the shaft, the distance of centre line of pulley from centre line of bearing being 400mm ,find the
diameter of shaft. Assuming max. Allowable shear stress of 42 MPa (3 MARKS)
