Mr. Mike Casey

President, Tigercomm
Dear Mr. Casey:
I am currently doing an environmental project, and my topic was coal. I saw the article of you addressing
the environmental and public health effects of coal consumption. I was wondering if you could help us
by giving more information on the use and effects of coal based on your experience. I would also like to
find out more of the cost of the extraction of coal, not only the cost in terms of money but the cost of
the community around the area that is being affected. I know that the most common way of extraction
is underground shaft mines and that the cost of this is that it causes lung cancer to the workers that
work there. I have also learned about open pit mines and that the cost of this is the destruction of soil
and that the over burden contaminates water with harmful toxins. I have found information on the
byproducts of coal such as coal slurry and the effects that occur when it isnt treated right, but I would
like to get more information on the disposal of coal and know more of the effects that happen if you
dont dispose it right. What do you think are solutions to this problem? What can be done to prevent
future problems?

Sincerely,

Jorge Perez
