SECRET PLACES
Theyre in the centre of the city. Many people have hidden in them, walked through them, read books
in them, explored them and some people have lived in them. Can you guess what they are? No, not
houses. Theyre secret passages.
The passages are in the city of Lyon, France. They are everywhere, but you cant see them because they
are under the ground. The entrances are behind doors in buildings or streets. Some of the passages are
about 700 years old. People built them under the hills of the city because they wanted to get from place
to place very quickly. These older passages were quite easy to find. But later, people built secret
passages to hide from the police.
The streets of Lyon zigzag up and down the hills and are quite long. So, it is easier to use the passages.
But theres one problem not many people know where they are. If you want to see the passages, you
will need a guide. But even the guide wont find them all.
