FAUVISM

20th century
ETYMOLOGY & HISTORY
The contrast to traditional art was so striking it
led critic Louis Vauxcelles to describe the artists
as Les Fauves or wild beasts,
Fauvism was a style of painting developed in
France at the beginning of the 20th century by
Henri Matisse and Andr Derain.
First new artistic style of the 20th century
Was short lived because of the different ideas of
the artists
It had a large impact on other expressionistic
movements,
PIONEERS
Henri Matisse, Andr Derain, and Maurice
Vlaminck were the best known Fauve artists
for pioneering its distinctive style.
Henri Matisse and Andre Derain (1880-1954),
who had both studied together in 1897,
together with Derain's close friend Maurice de
Vlaminck (1876-1958)
INFLUENCES
It is the first real avant-garde art of the 20th
century, although it had no agenda, no
manifesto, no agreed set of aesthetics: just a
wide group of friends with similar ideas about
painting.
Influenced by: Impressionism, Symbolism,
Synthetism and Van Gogh
