PART 1: CONTEXT AND CONAN DOYLE

I. HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT: why the mystery/detective genre
flowered during the late Victorian era
Conventions: incompetence of the police, addiction and empire(Sheryl) chaos
after the war, increase of education (Alicia)
A. The Industrial Revolution, which caused
Higher populations in the city of London, which caused
Higher crime rates, which caused
A new and relatively incompetent police force, and
The rise of the middle class and education for the middle class

B. A Growing Acceptance of Science, Technological Advancements
Including printing presses that made it possible for more people to read
C. The appeal of a hero who was different than earlier heroes
The holdover from the Romantics of the genius, intellectual hero
The Empire as hero--the Victorian age is the height of Englands
power as an empire, and their heroes represent the dominance of the
empire; Empire and Addiction

II. THE CLASSICAL PHASE OF GENRE DEVELOPMENT: Conan Doyle
Conventions
A. Sherlock Holmes--the Detective
Genius, eccentric, lack of social skills, arrogant no disguises
Scientific methods (scientific examination of crime scenes, scientific
experiments)
Deductive Reasoning to solve a case
Observation, Deduction, Knowledge
B. John Watson--the sidekick
Narrator: We see the story through his perspective
Loyal
The Quintessential Victorian Gentleman (a mirror of the middle class
male readers)
Watson and Holmes relationship: They need each other
C. Other characters
The client--presents the case
a. always meet at 221b Baker st. (Sherlocks home)
b. the cases tend to be unusual. i.e... silver blaze, a story without
a person murdering the victim. it was the horse that murders the victim.
The incompetent policeman
a. they were inefficient during the Victorian era.
b. Writers began to protest about the inefficiency of the
policeman and thats where the idea of a genius came playing as a
detective. (Genius who can be put in your pocket.)
The villain
a.the villains were not caught during the Victorian era, so a
detective story that caught the criminals was highly favored by the
audience
D. Conventions of Plot
Unusual solutions/twists when Holmes solves the case
a. The unique formal pattern of the detective story genre
lies in its double and duplicitous plot. The plot is double because
the story is first narrated as it appears to the bewildered
bystanders who observe the crime and are to some extent
threatened by it but who cannot arrive at its
solution.(delamater 1).
