ADEI PREZ GRANILLO

3.B
Joseph Lister, 1st Baron Lister
was born on the 5 April 1827 in
Upton, Essex and died on 10
February 1912.

Between 1883 and 1897, he was
a British surgeon who started
antiseptic surgery.

Lister successfully introduced
carbolic acid (now known as
phenol) to sterilise surgical
instruments and to clean
wounds, which made surgery
safer for patients.

When he was in the University
College London, he first
graduated from botany and
Arts.

Later he graduated as
Bachelor of Medicine.

Because of his great studies he
entered the Royal College of
Surgeons at the age of 26.

In 1853 Lister became a house surgeon at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. He was
terrified at the number of patients whose wounds became infected and went
worst.

At that time no one knew what caused infection but in 1865 Lister heard that
diseases were caused by 'germs'.

Lister realized it was important to kill the germs in wounds so the wounds
wouldn't get infected.

LISTER USED
CARBONIC ACID
(ANTISEPTIC) AS
THE GERM-KILLER .
BECAUSE OF HIS
INVENT LESS
WOUNDS WERE
INFECTED AND THERE
WERE LESS PATIENTS
WHO DIED.

Lister retired after his
wife died.

Lister died on 10
February 1912 in his
home in Walmer, at the
age of 84.

Despite the retirement, he
still did a really important
surgery:

Edward VII came down with
appendicitis. The operation
was extremely risky because
of the post-operational
infection, and surgeons didn't
dare to operate him. Lister
advised them with his surgical
methods, and the King
survived.

THE EXPECIAL
SURGERY
After his death, they founded the Lister Medal,
which is the most important prize that a surgeon
can win.

He also was given more honours, such us:
Two postage stamps, he became one of the
twelve original members of the Order of Merit,
he was given some foreign honours...

Lister is one of the two surgeons in the United Kingdom who
have the honour of having a public monument in London and
Lister Hospital in Hertfordshire, England is named after him.

Nowadays, we all know Listerine a product name for a
liquid for cleaning inside the mouth, sold in bottles.

This product was named after Joseph Lister.

It was first sold in the US in 1895.
