GandhiwasandalsowasnotsuccessfulatcreatingIndiannationalismbecause
nationalismwasatitspeakbutHindusandMuslimsstartedfightingafterindependencewas
gained.
BeforeGandhistartedchangingIndia,MuslimsandHinduslivedinthesamecountrybutthey
nevercametogetheraspeople(MWH452).TheMuslimLeagueandTheIndianCongressparty
triedtobuildnationalismbeforebuttheycouldnevergetthepeoplesattentionbecausethey
didntknowwhatthepeasantshadtogothrough(GandhiFilm,scene2).Overall,the
nationalisticmovementsofIndiabeforeGandhiwereacompleteseparationoftwogroupsthat
haddifferentbeliefs,customsandreligions.ButwhenGandhiarrives,everythingchanges.
GandhigotallIndianstorefusetobuyBritishmadegoods,tomarchwithhimtogathersalt,and
tousethenonviolentweaponofdisobedience(MWH454,455).Everyonegottogetherbecause
atthatmoment,theybelievedthattheyhadtocometogetherasacountrytogainindependence,
tofighttheoppressor(GandhiFilm,scene5).Acountrythatwasseparated,wheredifferent
groupsignoredother,whereitlookedliketherewasnohope,waschangedbyonemanandhis
namewasGandhi.TheseactsbroughtIndiatogetherbecauseGandhiwasabletoshowthem
thattheyhadthepowertobringtheBritishdownpeacefullybutonlyiftheyworkedtogether.But
sadly,thisnationalismwouldnotholdupforlong.AfterIndiagainsitsindependence,nationalism
dropped.MuslimsandHindusarguedandfoughtforwhowouldbeleader.Acivilwarwasatplay
(MWH564).Afterworkingforyears,GandhisdreamofhavinganationalisticIndiahadfailed.
TheselfishnessofbothMuslimsandHinduswasthecauseofamanslifelongworktocollapse.
AllofIndiawasfighting.GandhihadbothsucceededandfailedatcreatingnationalisminIndia.
Hesucceededinbuildingitforacertaintimebutintheend,itwasnotenough.Thisissignificant
becauseitshowsushowonemancouldchangethecourseofacountry,butalsohowother
peoplesselfishnesscouldruinitrapidly.
