YouTube Assignment- Sleep by Eric Whitacre

Over the past weeks we have been preparing Sleep by Eric Whitacre. As weve
discussed in class, this piece was written first as a choral piece and then as arranged
as a band piece. During this assignment you will view various videos that will help
you better understand the piece as a whole. The following video examples are
uploaded to our band website for you to view. Please write out your response and
bring them to class for discussion tomorrow.

VIDEO #1
Whitacre - Sleep - The Eric Whitacre Singers

*This video scrolls through the choral score along with the recording. With your
music next to you, identify 3 spots in the music where your part lines up with the
vocal score. (Use the measures on your music as reference)

1.) Measure ______ to ______ my part is in the _________ Vocal Line

2.) Measure ______ to ______ my part is in the _________ Vocal Line

3.) Measure ______ to ______ my part is in the _________ Vocal Line

Remember that when the vocal lines split into two separate parts, the top note is
considered 1 and the bottom note is 2 (ex- Soprano 1/Soprano 2). If there is only
1 note you may just refer to the line as soprano/alto/tenor/bass with no number.

VIDEO #2
Eric Whitacre - Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir 2.0, 'Sleep'

*Once you completed Video #1, watch Video #2. This is a video of a virtual choir
composed of vocalist all over the world. The individuals included in the
video/recording sent in their individual vocal part to be uploaded together to
create a choir. After view answer the following questions on the back of this
page.

1.) How is the virtual choir set up like a concert band?

2.) What difficulties could arise when creating an ensemble virtually?

3.) Would it be possible to create a virtual band? If so, how would you go about
doing it; if not, what would cause a virtual band to not be possible?

4.) What did you take away from these two videos that we can use in our
rehearsal tomorrow?
