Real Number

A real number is any positive or negative number. This includes all integers and all rational
and irrational numbers. Rational numbers may be expressed as a fraction (such as 7/8)
and irrational numbers may be expressed by an infinite decimal representation
(3.1415926535...). Real numbers that include decimal points are also called floating
point numbers, since the decimal "floats" between the digits.

Rational
Any number that can be made by dividing one integer by another. The word comes from "ratio".

Irrational
A real number that cannot be written as a simple fraction - the decimal goes on forever without
repeating.

Integer
A number with no fractional part.
Includes the counting numbers {1, 2, 3, ...}, zero {0}, and the negative of the counting numbers {-1, -
2, -3, ...}
You can write them down like this: {..., -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ...}

Non-Integer
Mathematics . one of the positive or negative numbers 1, 2, 3, etc., or zero. Compare whole
number.
a complete entity. Synonyms: integral, whole.

Whole Number
The numbers {0, 1, 2, 3, ...} etc.
There is no fractional or decimal part. And no negatives.
Example: 5, 49 and 980 are all whole numbers.

Natural Number
The whole numbers from 1 upwards: 1, 2, 3, and so on ...

Or from 0 upwards in some fields of mathematics: 0, 1, 2, 3 and so on ...

No negative numbers and no fractions.
