Pride

1. Happily live the lowly who practice humility,


Thousands of haughty personages, O Nanak!
Have been crushed to the dust through their pride.

2. He she is proud, Shall be burnt in the fire of His wrath.

3. A wealthy man is full of conceit for his wealth,


And a landlord boasts of his land.GURU V, JAITSRI RAG

4. He who feels proud of sovereign powers will be thrown in hell,


And will be born again a dog; He who takes pride in the beauty of his person,
Becomes a vermin of filth; He who vaunts his ritualism,
Wanders through many incarnations; He who boasts of wealth and estate,
Betrays his folly, blindness and ignorance; Nanak, he in whose heart the Gracious
Provi dence instils humility,Attains salvation in this world and beatitude in
the next.

5. Says Nanak, he who is proud of self,


Shall not appear beautiful before the Lord.

6. Give up your pride,


And prostrate at the feet of the Lord.

7. He who boasts of his possessions,


Shall fall to the dust in a moment.

8. He who is proud,
Shall be destroyed.
GURU IV, SORATH RAG

9. The filth of pride cannot be washed off,


Even if one takes bath at hundred Tirthas.

10. He who considers high and others low,


And he who acts or talks with pride.
Shall be driven to hell.
KABIRJI, MARU RAG

11. He that is high shall fall to the dust;


He that is low needs fear no hell.

12. Pride is a disease of the mind.

13. He who calls himself good.


Goodness never comes near him.

14. Remove pride from your heart,


And serve the True Guru,
Thus you will be respected in His Court.

15. Kabir, do not feel proud,


And do not laugh at a poor man;
Yet the boat is in the midstream,
Who knows what may happen?

16. Why are you proud of your body and wealth,


And why don't you remember God?

17. Nanak, they are silly asses,


Who are proud without possessing any merit.

18. Without the True Guru,

Pride is not removed from the heart.

19. Of what can the created one be proud?


For, the Creator alone hath the power to give.
