Taking a closer look at the six components

Develop clear rules

The classroom rules need to be established
very early on and reinforced on a daily basis.

- The rules need to be simple and
reasonable
- The student needs to understand why a
rule exists, as that will ensure a greater
chance that they will respect the rule
- The rules need to be displayed in the
classroom so that both the teacher and
students can refer to them.

Appropriate consequences for negative
behaviour

The consequences applied need to specific
and individual to each rule. The
consequences need to be equal for all
breaches of the particular rule.

- The consequences need to be easy to
implement
- It is best if the consequence is tedious as
the students will never want to do it
again.
- The consequence must be achievable so
that the student and teacher can move on
at the completion.

Reward positive behaviour

It is important to not only punish negative
behaviour, but reward positive behaviour.
-The rewards need to be immediate

-The rewards system needs to be seen as fair
and consistent.

Set a routine

Students need to know exactly what is
expected of them at school

- Students need to be aware that teachers
run the school, and they need to take
control of their learning space

- It is important that students understand
that what they are being asked to do is in
the best interests of their learning

Follow through with consequences

If a student breaks a rule, there must be a
consequence and this consequence must be
followed through.

-Dont favour students

Wong & Wong (2004) developed the idea
that educators need to equate consequences
to choices, every action has a reaction or
result and consequences are the result of
personal choices by the student.

If a student breaks a rule, there must be a
consequence. If this doesnt occur every time
a rule is broken the classroom is undermined
and the students will challenge the rules.

Develop positive teacher-learner relationships

Teacher- learner relationships are essential
for the development of a positive classroom
environment and to ensure that classroom
management is achievable.
