"We'll have a cow," said George. "An' we'll have maybe a pig an' chickens... an' down the flat we'll have
a... little piece alfalfa-"
"For the rabbits," Lennie shouted.
"For the rabbits," George repeated.
"And I get to tend the rabbits."
"An' you get to tend the rabbits." Lennie giggled with happiness.
"An' live on the fatta the lan'."
"Yes."
Lennie turned his head.
"No, Lennie. Look down there acrost the river, like you can almost see the place."
Lennie obeyed him. George looked down at the gun

He could hear the sound of footsteps in the brush disturbing the silence. They grew louder as
Georges hands began to tremble. He could almost hear Aunt Clara in his head. Lennie don't never take
no care. He just causes you trouble George. When are you gonna do something for yourself?"
Dont turn around now alright? George raised his hand slowly upwards, the gun wobbling in
his fingers. Sweat dripped down his forehead under the suns glare. The animals could be heard
scurrying away, a disturbance on the horizon. He hadnt expected this to be the ending. Lining the gun
up with the back of his friends head, George inhaled deeply.
But before he could pull the trigger, his name was called.
George! He turned to see Curley thundering down the path. Lemme! Panicking, he turned back
around to be confronted with Lennies confused expression and accusing eyes focused on the barrel of
his gun.
George you said, you said the rabbit an the alfalfa- you said- You promised! Lennie started to yell
furiously, latching onto Georges arm. Consumed with guilt, George pleaded to Curley.
He didnt mean to, let im go wont you? Well go away now. Well disappear forever.
Curley smiled wickedly.
Yes you will.
Two shots were fired.
