Verb Tense Changes
When reported speech is introduced by a verb in the
past tense (said, told):
present tense past tense
Mike: "I want to grow the company."
Sylvia: Mike said he wanted to grow the
company.
simple past past perfect OR simple past
Sylvia: "I finished the presentation
early."
Tom: Sylvia told me that she had
finished the presentation early.
OR
Tom: Sylvia told me that she finished
the presentation early.
Some modals change (can, will, may, must):
can

Sylvia: "I can come to the sales
meeting on Tuesday."
Tom: Sylvia said she could come to the
sales meeting on Tuesday.
Some modals do not change (would, should,
could, ought to):
