My favorite project this year was the George Segall Inspired Masks. I liked
having to interpret a painting into a mask. I liked taking inspiration from the painting to create a
mask that was one of a kind. Also I just really have a thing for masks so that was just a cherry on
top. I chose the painting
Tree of Life by Gustav Klimt is based on its organic feel. The combinations of color
around it were beautiful they all had an earthy feel to it. The painting had a man and the woman
on either side of the painting with circles and ovals representing man and triangles representing
woman. I took those shapes and created created the 3D elements with them. For the woman side
I created spikes that had blue, orange and brown accents. For the man I created ovals that came
off the mask and had brown, red and orange accents. I created a tree with hot glue that when
from the chin up the nose and spread out onto the forehead.
The technical skills I learned were fabricating 3D elements that when off the the mask. I
have never actually made something jump of the canvas/mask. I had only given the illusion of it.
Also I had never really gotten the chance to use plaster of paris, but when I saw how the other
masks dried and how firm they felt I might try to use it this summer.
What I learned about myself in the class was that Im ok at painting. I thought that I was
absolutely horrible at it but Im ok. I definitely got a boost of confidence from the class to
explore painting more this summer and possibly include a few paintings in my portfolio for art
school.
