Scholar Challenge #3

This is my Scholar Challenge #3,I chose choice A for this scholar
challenge. This scholar challenge was about I went to Tokyo International
high school I needed to buy school supplies for school. But when I bought
my supplies, I forgot how many of each I purchased. But I knew what I
bought , therefore I could set up an equation for this question.
First I know what I bought, ballpoint pens and pencils.Theres an other
thing that I also know is when I looked at the receipt,it shows a total of ten
items purchased for a total of 610 yen but it didnt show how many of each
item I purchased.I remember each pencil cost 40 yen and ballpoint pens
cost 30 yen each.
So let x represent how many pencils I bought, let 10-x represent how
many ballpoint pens I bought.I did this because I bought 10 items total,if x
represents how many pencils I bought, then I will use total items minus all
the pencils so it will get us the ballpoint pens. After I defined the variables,I
got the equation 40*x+(40+30)*10-x=610. In the equation, 40*x represents
the total cost of the pencils.
The first step we need to do is do the math inside the parentheses
which gets us 40*x+70*(10-x)=610 Now we got parentheses on 10-x,I did
this because 10-x represents how many ballpoint pens I bought. The next
step I did was distributive property and I got 40*x+700-70*x=610.At this
step, you can just simplify to get -30*x+700=610.Then I subtracted both
sides by 700 ,then divide both sides by -30.The answer of this equation is
x=3 pencils.But we didnt get the ballpoint pens,so we substitute,put 3 into
x in the equation 10-x which gets us 7 ball point pens.
To make sure my work is correct,we need to check.
Pencils:40*3=120 yen
Ballpoint pens: 70*7=490 yen
120 yen + 490 yen =610 yen
As you see I added the money that I purchased for pencils and pens
and I got 610 yen which is correct.
