her PhD in 2006. Her doctoral research

adults with severe intellectual disabilities
and challenging behaviours and involved
the earlier version of MOSAIC.

A Model of Observational Screening for the Analysis of
Interaction and Communication (MOSAIC) is a tool used by
speech pathologists and others working with people with
intellectual disabilities to gather information about how a
person with a disability currently communicates. It contains
easy to use forms designed to structure your observations of a
person with a disability to allow you to pinpoint how much
they understand and how they communicate using behaviour,
speech and a range of symbols
FEATURES
Allows analysis of comprehension and expressive abilities
of the person
Includes observation of the person in a range of
environments
Is consistent with the terminology used in the International
Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF)
Includes analysis of challenging behaviour within a
communication framework
Leads to structured goal planning.
Andy Smidt has provided a tool
that is easy to use and which
provides an excellent overview
of the communication problems
that people with intellectual
disability and their support staff
grapple with every day
