Guidei!e"+ Procedure" %!d )ue" 'or Summer Project
Summer Project is an integral part of the 24 months PGDM programmes of K J Somaiya
Institute of Management Studies & esearch !SIMS"# Mum$ai%
&he period for the training is t'o to t'o and half months# tentati(ely during the months of
)pril*June of e(ery year% +o student is allo'ed to change the organi,ation of training
assigned to him- her 'ithout the prior appro(al of the Institute%
&his manual includes guidelines# procedures and rules for the Summer Project 'hich is a
compulsory re.uirement for the a'ard of Post Graduate Diploma in Management
(PGDM) and Post Graduate Diploma in Management - International Business
(PGDM-IB) at SIMS%
Pur,o"e o' "ummer ,roject
&he o$jecti(e of the Summer Project eport is to allo' students to organi,e and report the
learning gained during their summer placement% /rom the point of (ie' of academics# the
Summer Project eport should $e an intelligent presentation of the student0s understanding
and resolution-o$ser(ations of management pro$lems% &he Summer Project eport should
demonstrate the integrated understanding of the (arious su$*$ranches of management that
the student has learnt in the first year of his study%
&he recommendations made in the Summer Project eport should as far as possi$le $e in
$oth .uantitati(e !costs and $enefits" as 'ell as .ualitati(e terms% It is pertinent to note that
the Summer Project eport represents a (isi$le concrete output and may stand as
testimony of the student1s demonstrated potential in the managerial arena%

2% &o pro(ide the student 'ith an e3tensi(e e3posure to a hands*on e3perience in a
corporate en(ironment%
2% &o ensure that the company - organi,ation gets ade.uate $enefit from the students
in terms of the resources it spends on them during the training so that there is a
mutual $enefit of e3perience and learning%
4% &o pro(ide a platform for the company - organi,ation to test the relia$ility# .uality
and performance of the students so that it results in concurrent projects or
preplacement offers later if the companies so deem fit%

Minimum 7 'ee6s $ut not more than 25 'ee6s%

&he topic for the Summer Project 'ill $e stipulated $y the company - organi,ation%
8hile the focus should $e on the company0s topic# the students may suggest additional
topics to $e co(ered during their Summer Internship 'ithout affecting the .uality of their
report on topic stipulated $y the company%
Su,er/i"io! 1 Guide"
During the Summer Internship the student 'ill $e under the guidance of an official in the
company - organi,ation 'ho 'ill act as the 9orporate Guide% &he 9orporate Guide 'ill
pro(ide guidelines on ho' the student should 'or6 during the stay 'ith the company -
organi,ation%
In addition# each student 'ill $e guided $y a /aculty Guide of SIMS% &he student is
re.uired to report to the /aculty Guide immediately after joining the company and indicate
the topic and details and proposed methodology% It is the duty of e(ery student to 6eep
regularly in tough 'ith the SIMS /aculty Guide regarding the progress of the Summer
Project%
&he /aculty Guide may consult the 9orporate Guide periodically to re(ie' the progress of
the Summer Internship of the student%

&he /aculty Guide for the summer project 'ill help the student to:

i" 9ritically e(aluate and impro(e the Summer Project eport proposal de(eloped $y the
student%
ii" Super(ise and Guide the student on the methodology and approach%
iii" Pro(ide feed$ac6 from time to time $ased on the student0s progress%
i(" Gi(e 'ritten feed$ac6 on the draft of the Summer Project eport su$mitted $y the
student to the /aculty Guide in last 'ee6 of June 2524%
(" ;nsure the .uality and rigor of the Summer Project eport and its compliance 'ith the
SIMS Guidelines in this regard%

2% Students are re.uired to a$ide $y the rules of the company - organi,ation 'here
they are undergoing their summer internship%
2% 9ompany - organi,ations are particular a$out punctuality and $eha(ior of the
student during the internship% &herefore the student is re.uired to $e on his-her $est
$eha(ior%
4% In case a student has to ta6e lea(e of a$sence /< 9<MP;==I+G ;)S<+S#
he-she needs to ta6e prior permission from the company - organi,ation and the
/aculty Guide $efore he-she proceeds on short lea(e%
4% Sho' enthusiasm for the project allotted to you $y the company% Smile and 'or6
hard% )s6 topic related .uestions $ut refrain from $eing argumentati(e%
>% In case# the organi,ation needs some urgent 'or6 to $e done# not falling 'ithin the
pur(ie' of your project# please do it 'illingly% It 'ill enhance your learning%
?% 8hen at 'or6# please remem$er you are not a student $ut an intern% espect the
organi,ation0s rules 'hile 'or6ing there 'ith them% @eha(e li6e a professional
manager in spirit and in action% Aou are student of SIMS and therefore 'ill o$ser(e
the ethical conduct and norms of the Institute in addition to the company0s norms%

&he purpose of the Summer Project proposal is to ena$le the student to ha(e a tangi$le
$usiness or managerial pro$lem to 'or6 on for the period of 7 to 25 'ee6s%
8riting of the proposal is intended to enhance the students0 understanding# grasp and
clarity of the su$ject matter and the 9<+&;C& of the managerial pro$lem of the company%
)ll the students are re.uired to su$mit their proposal or a statement of 'hat they intend to
