This paper examines the political aspects of international tourism and in the focus of the analysis are some of the key theoretical and practical issues of contemporary tourism flows in the world. The first part provides a brief overview of the economic, social and cultural importance of tourism in the modern world and its potential political consequences. In this sense, the following key political dimensions of tourism are successively analyzed: the interaction between political theory and international tourism; comparative analysis of the political goals of tourism; correlation between international political relations and tourism; the influence of ideology on tourism; the concept and different forms of political tourism; political socialization through tourism; the power, authority, legitimacy and sovereignty and their impact on tourism; the relationship between tourism and political development; the effect of hegemony, globalization and divergence - convergence on tourism; the effects of various forms of political instability on tourism. In conclusion, based on a comparative analysis of the political dimensions of tourism, possible directions of further research are identified. Finally, the need of political researches of tourism in Serbia is pointed out.
