th
grade: Art: Concept Map of Ghost World
For this lesson students were asked to create a concept map of a topic. This student
product shows that this student chose to diagram (or concept map) the graphic novel Ghost
World by Daniel Clowes. The students use of this graphic organizer gives us an idea of the
general plot of the story and a bit of insight into the books two main characters. The student
created flow throughout the map using arrows from one bubble to the next. Once the student
was finished with a general diagram of the book, the student used color-coding in order to
categorize the bubbles. This chose to categorize the bubbles based on the following topics:
Characters, Adjectives, Things, Places, and Actions, and created a legend key to show color
representation.
A graphic organizer promotes critical thinking and aids students in visualizing the story,
or the material in which they are learning. In this instance, the use of a graphic organizer aids
the student in determining correlations and relationships/ interactions between the characters.
. Also in the instance noted above, the use of a graphic organizer lesson also helped to point
out the differences and similarities of characters, and aided students in seeing the big picture
of the story. In general, graphic organizers could aid students in understanding causes and
effects, while color coding aids in visualizing divisions.
