6
th
grade: Art: Class Color Research

Using their knowledge of colors on the color wheel, students were asked to survey ten
of their fellow classmates asking the question, What is your favorite color? Students then
used a spreadsheet program to apply this data to the creation of a frequency chart. In the
spreadsheet program, the students labeled columns A-D as follows: Classmates Name, Favorite
Color, Colors, and Frequency. In the first column, the student listed their classmates name(s),
and in the column next to that they listed that classmates favorite color. In the 3
rd
column, the
student used their prior knowledge of the color wheel to list the seven colors the wheel
contains. The students counted the number of times (frequency) each color was chosen, and
placed that number in Column D next to the name of that color. Then, the student selected and
inserted the column graph. Lastly, the student changed the color of each individual graph
column to match the name of that color for each bar on the graph.

Additional Lesson Idea 1
*Students will research artists and select art works from various art eras to determine which art
elements occur most often throughout these artistic periods.
Column 1: Artist name
Column 2: Name of the Artwork
Column 3: Artistic Period (Renaissance, Impressionist, Modern, etc.)
Column 4: Start with this column listing art elements such as parallel lines, shadowing,
diminishing lines, etc. You will probably need 6 or more of these.

*Students will mark with an X on all that apply for each art piece.
*Then, students can create a line chart to see which element occurs the most often throughout
the periods.

Additional Lesson Idea 2
*Students will create spreadsheets to compare prices of art recently sold.
*Students will use the internet to research fine art auctions like Sothebys for artworks recently
sold and the prices were sold for.
*Students will use their prior knowledge to create a spreadsheet with this information to create
a column chart to compare the prices for the pieces sold.
