3 ) N O C O I L B U ZZ F R O M I N V E R T E R , - 5 V A B S E N T
From symptom 1 it should be obvious that TR4 (ZTX650) is very prone to
damage and t h i s symptom is a sure indication that TR4 must be replaced. How-
ever, before replacing the TR4 check the TR5 (ZTX213) (using a transistor
tester is O.K.) and the c o i l since it is not unk nown for a l l three to have gone
at the same time and if o n l y the TR4 is replaced it can fail again immediately
if the others are faulty.
Whether or not these three are faulty or not, there can be one or more
faulty RAMS as w e l l caused possibly by the same forcing in of an interface
during switch on. If a l l else has been fixed, switch on and check if any RAM
gets hot; replace any very hot RAMS either in basic set or in extra board as
t h i s is a sure sign of b e i n g short circuit. If open circuit, the guickest way
to check is to bye-pass each RAM in turn using a RAM known to be O.K. When so
doing the same RAM must be used as the suspect and it s h o u l d not be removed
after each check for some ten seconds after each switch off or it w i l l fault
itself. Use of a 'scope or logic probe is clearly a better a l t e r n a t i v e if
a v a i l a b l e . Tandy m < t k e a good, inexpensive logic probe.

If resetting the computer doesn't h e l p , which is not uncommon if a CTV
is b e i n g used, then the only thing is to set up the computer to display a
coloured background w i t h white printing. See spectrum manual for this, but
green is the most relaxing background. Save this programme and load it every
time Spectrum is not being used for games.
