Function of Language
Instrumental language
- What we use to get what we want to satisfy needs / desires.
- E.g : Polite requests, persuasion & argument
Imaginative language
- To create a world of ones own / express fantasy.
- E.g : Dramatic play, poetry, stories
Regulatory language
- To control the behaviour of others / Getting them to do what we want.
- E.g : Giving orders
Interactional language
- To define social relationships & language all of us in group.
- E.g : Negotiations
Personal language
- To express individuality & personality.
- E.g : Strong feelings & opinions
Heuristic language
- To explore, investigate, acquire knowledge & understanding.
- E.g : Figuring things out.
Informative language
- To communicate information / report facts / conclusions from facts.
- E.g : Give information
