Know what an argument (thesis statement) is, its purpose and function in the
essay, and how to construct it

Know what a claim (topic sentence) is, its purpose and function in the essay, and
how to construct it

Know what evidence is and how to use it in the paper.

Know what a warrant is and how to use it in the paper.

Know how to use an academic voice (no personal pronouns, no slang, careful
attention to grammar and punctuation, etc.)

Know ethos, pathos, logos.
