It is a disease of the human immune
system caused by the infection with
human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).


Is a virus that leads to AIDS.
Originated in non-human primates in
west-central Africa & were transferred to
humans in the early 20
th
century.





SIV (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus) was
transferred to humans as a result of
chimps being killed and eaten or their
blood getting into cuts or wounds on the
hunter.

Is the final stage of HIV infection.

AIDS

-is the syndrome which
appears in advanced
stages of HIV infection
- Is a medical condition

1. WINDOW PERIOD reflects the window
of time between infection w/ the virus &
when HIV antibodies develop in the blood
stream.

2. SEROCONVERSION time during which
your body is busy producing HIV
antibodies , trying to protect itself against
the virus.

-people experience flu-like symptoms &
swollen lymph nodes.

-highly infectious stage
3. ASYMPTOMATIC PERIOD this period
can last anywhere from 6mos to 10 years,
varying from person to person.
4. SEVERE CD4+T CELLS LOSS leading
to SYMPTOMATIC PERIOD body
experiences the symptoms associated
with HIV.


Rapid wt. loss
Dry cough
Recurring fever or profuse night sweats
Profound & unexplained fatigue
Swollen lymph glands in the armpits,
groin or neck


Diarrhea that last for more than a week
White spots or unusual blemishes on the
tongue , in the mouth or in the throat
Pneumonia
Red, brown, pink or purplish blotches on
or under the skin or inside the mouth,
nose or eyelids
Memory loss, depression & other
neurological disorders.










HIV screening w/ the presence of certain
signs & symptoms

- use of condom
- be monogamous
- be faithful





There is currently no cure or effective HIV
vaccine.

Treatment consists of high active
antiretroviral therapy which slows the
progression of the disease.

(pneumonia, meningitis, herpes simplex/
