Unit 23 LO1

Chloe Warren
Finding Nemo
Finding nemo is a Disney Animated film which is based around the
dangers of the sea. The story starts when Nemo ventures into the
open sea, despite his father's constant warnings about many of the
ocean's dangers. Nemo is abducted by a boat and netted up and sent
to a dentist's office in Sydney. The pair then spends all their time
looking for clues and ways they can reunite.
This narrative is a linear because it has a beginning middle and an
end; this is most probably because its a childs film meaning it wont
be left on a cliff hanger. This is not a realist film as this scenario is
very unlikely to happen. This film is not a sequal because the film did
not end with any type of cliff hanger and was not left open for any
other type of film to be made.
Within different scenes the lighting changes dependent on the time,
for instance in the beginning we see a long shot of the whole reef.
The colours here are really bright and glowing where as in the middle
of the film when Dory and Marvin appear at the trench the lighting is
dark and gloomy
Throughout the film there are many different camera angles such as,
long shots, mid shots, close ups and tracking. An example of a mid-
shot is when Dora and Marvin first meet. This film would of needed
lots of post-production and planning before the film was carried out
such as having a script to see what clip is coming next in the
storyline. Finally in this film there is diegetic and non-diegetic
sounds. For example the background music that was playing when
nemo was abducted. This created empathy for the audience but also
factors such as speech and sound effects.
The lion king
The lion king is a Disney animated child's film. The Lion King tells the
story of Simba, a young lion who is to succeed his father, Mufasa, as
king; however, after Simba's uncle Scar murders Mufasa, Simba is
fooled into thinking he was responsible and flees into exile in shame
and despair. Upon maturation living with two wastrels, Simba is given
some valuable perspective from his friend, Nala, and his shaman, Rafiki,
before returning to challenge Scar to end his tyranny. This film had a
linear narrative as it has a beginning, middle and an end without and
flashbacks or any time travelling ect. This film is also not a realist film as
it is not realistic, by this I mean in real life there is going to be no talking
animals who rule a kingdom. Also this film, just like finding nemo has a
great contrast of lighting throughout the film. For example as you can
see in the picture on the top right, you can see that the lighting is dark
as you can see the sun set and just their silhouettes this is letting the
audience know that it is night time where as mid way through the film
when Simba is playing you can see that lighting is very bright all the
colours on screen are illuminated making the settings very clear.
Throughout the film there are many different camera angles such as,
long shots, mid shots, close ups and tracking. A good exmple a close us
is when Mr Pig gets angry at the end and there is a close up of his head.
Friends
Friends is an American television sitcom based on a group of 6 friends
who is living in Manhattan, this is a comedy and this programme follows
the friends round on their daily lives to see what hectic scenario they will
face next. This sitcom has got many camera angles this is because its a
comedy sitcom so this is in need to gain everyone's reaction. There are
many camera angles some of my favourites that I can clearly see is when
watching this is close ups. This is very important as it shows everyone's
reaction making the sitcom more entertaining. When it comes down to
the story line for this series its very hard to tell as some of the episodes
can be linear and some may be non linear (less likely) but it always
changes and for example it always has a beginning, middle and end.
However sometimes the comedy can end on a cliff-hanger. There would
have been a lot of planning and pre-production to make such a
successful series this is because there are different storylines per episode
but will need a script throughout the whole of the series as they need to
build up to a dramatic ending at the end of the series for the finale.
How I met your mother
The series follows the main character, Ted Mosby, and his group of friends
in Manhattan. As a framing device, Ted, in the year 2030, recounts to his
son and daughter the events that led him to meeting their mother. This
narrative is linear because it has a stable beginning, middle and end. This
doesnt have any cliff hangers or any sequals because it has light hearted
humour and again just like friends it all has to flow for the big finale and
the ending. This would of all been planned out in the pre-production
which would of consisted of a long massive script, story boards etc. so the
director knows exactly what scene is coming next with knowledge of
every shot he needs to use and the dialogue so what everyone is saying.
Within the different scenes there are lots of camera angles being used.
This is to capture all the funny moments such as the characters reaction,
or even if one of the characters made a mistake on screen they can edit
some parts to actually show on the sitcom to make the character come
more alive so that the who series becomes more humorous. The lighting
throughout is pretty much the same, the reason for this is because it
needs to be realistic and filmed as if we were seeing everything through
the human eye so for example there will be no unnatural light in the
production. There are many sound effects in this sitcom this is to enhance
the humour and make it more silly and light hearted.

Taken
Taken is a 2008 English-language French action thriller film, which Neeson
plays a former CIA operative named Bryan Mills who sets about tracking down
his daughter after she is kidnapped by human traffickers for sexual slavery
while traveling in France. He goes to great lengths to find his daughter fighting
anyone who gets in his way. Throughout this film the lighting is very dark and
gloomy because its a thriller which means it will be jumpy with a lot of action.
By making it dark and gloomy it sets the scene and makes the film more
dramatic and builds tension for the audience. A good bit where this film has
dim lighting is when his daughter Kim is under the bead on the phone to her
dad (Bryan) explaining that there are men in the house she is staying in
kidnapping her friends. When they come into the room there is a shot of Kim
under the bed on the phone. Its complete darkness and all you can see is the
reaction on her face. This built up tension as you didnt know when she was
going to get taken but when she did it make the audience shocked. There are
many different camera angles when watching this film such as tracking mid
shots, long shots, Birdseye shots ext this is to keep the film dramatic and the
audience feeling suspense as the audience doesnt know what film clip will
becoming next, again building up the tension to make a good thriller. This film
does not follow the normal conventions of a linear story line, for example,
throughout the film on several occasions Bryan has lots of flash backs, these
are vital during the film as it reminds people of the important scenes but also
makes the story line have a twist. This means that there is not a proper flow of
a beginning, middle and end.
Twilight

The Twilight Saga is a series of five romance fantasy films . The film is about
focuses on the development of a personal relationship between human
teenager Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and vampire Edward Cullen (Robert
Pattinson), and the subsequent efforts of Edward and his family to keep
Bella safe from a separate group of hostile vampires. This film is an action
packed thriller fantasy with a non linear narrative. This is because it does
not follow the typical conventions of a normal film for example by this I
mean the there are lots of flash backs, lots of supernatural scene, and lots
of time travelling. This means this film is also not a realist film as none of
the scenarios throughout the film is realistic nothing can happen in real
life. There is also lots of camera angles to enhance the tension such as
close ups, panning, tracking and much more. One of my favourite scenes in
this film is at the beginning where they are in the canteen and Bella meets
Edward for the first time, here you can see lots of close ups, this is crucial
as its showing his reaction which is the played back during on later in the
film showing its importance. This film would of needed a lot of detail to go
into every scene so there would be lots of pre production that would need
to be complete not only this but when it comes down to the editing there
would have been a great deal of time and effort going into it to create the
special effects and cutaways. For example when Edward is exposed to the
light, his skin glistens like a diamond and you can see this clearly in the
film. For this to happen the editor would have had to create the special
effects by doing one individual diamond by another to create the whole
diamond face. This film is one of many so its a sequal. At the ned of each
film they end on a cliff-hanger, this is important for the success as it
intrigues the audience to what is going to be happening next and makes
want to watch and find out what happens in the next film.
